Thunderhill Instructors Clinic

Thunderhill Raceway Park

About this event

Interested in becoming a high performance driving instructor or coach?  Do your friends and fellow drivers ask your advice and enjoy following you?

Want to become a better high performance driving instructor?

Would you like to receive your Level II certification under the Motorsport Safety Foundation program?

If the answer to any of these questions is “yes”, then read on.

Thunderhill Raceway Park is conducting a high performance driving Instructors Clinic December 6 and 7 that will address all three of the questions above:  Drivers who are curious about becoming instructors; instructors who would like to hone their skills as both drivers and instructors; and instructors who would like to receive their MSF Level II certification.

The clinic will be conducted on Thunderhill Raceway‘s two-mile West Track Saturday and Sunday, December 6 and 7. Enrollment will be limited to ensure all participants have plenty of track time and receive the full benefit of the experience. The focus of the clinic will be on instructing novice or beginner drivers.

The cost to all participants is $400.

The clinic will be organized into three separate modules.

Module 1: Introduction to high performance driving instruction. This module is open to any intermediate or advanced level driver who would like to learn more about how to become a driving instructor or coach. Participants will meet in a small classroom setting for group discussions and have multiple on-track sessions where they will be introduced to in-car instructing through role-playing exercises.

Module 2: Coaches Coaching Coaches. This module is open to any instructor or coach who has worked at least three HPDE events in 2025. Experienced instructors will work with other experienced instructors to further develop their skills and be exposed to new tools and techniques. In addition to group discussions, they will drive on track with instructors helping them improve their driving skills. They will then switch roles and coach their partner instructor. In this way, they will learn how to become better drivers while also learning new and different ways to become better coaches.

Module 3: MSF Level II Certification. The Motorsport Safety Foundation has created a national certification program designed to improve the safety and professionalism of HPDE instructors. This will be one of the few certification opportunities offered on the West Coast this year. Participation is limited to instructors or coaches who have achieved their Level I certification and who are recommended or endorsed by an HPDE organization’s chief instructor or head coach.

In addition to the activities organized around the three modules, participants will have ample opportunities to socialize and share experiences with their fellow instructors.

Thunderhill CEO Matt Busby will host a discussion Saturday evening on using data and data systems to assist coaches in their work.

Thunderhill is conducting this clinic in the interest of supporting HPDE organizations and the HPDE community.  The clinic has been developed in conjunction with lead instructors from Audi Club, Porsche Club, and Hooked on Driving. All instructors are welcome and will share equally the roles of students, teachers and event leaders.
