About this event
Driver's Delight for History Buffs - Angeles Crest Highway and the back roads to the Fort Tejon State Park
Beloved by cyclists and sports car drivers, the Angeles Crest Highway in the San Gabriel Mountains is one of GPX's favorite playgrounds. The route will be up Angeles Crest Hwy then left down Angeles Forest Road for a day of driving the scenic back roads. It continues on Lake Elizabeth and Old Ridge Route Roads ending at the Fort Tejon State Park, 4201 Fort Tejon Rd, Lebec, CA 93243. There will be a lunch stop along the way at Big John's Mountain Grill in Frazier Park.
Fort Tejon is located in the Grapevine Canyon, the main route between California's great central valley and Southern California. The fort was established to protect and control the Native Americans who were living on the Sebastian Indian Reservation, and white settlers from raids by the Paiutes, Chemeheui, Mojave, and other groups of the desert regions to the south east.
Fort Tejon was first garrisoned by the United States Army on August 10, 1854 and was abandoned ten years later on September 11, 1864.
There are restored adobes from the original fort and the park’s museum features exhibits on frontier and army life and local history. There is also information on the 8.0 earthquake in 1857.
Entry Fee is $3 per person
