Intensive Driving School + Open Track

Watkins Glen Int'l

About this event

Once again, the Boston Chapter is proud to host a Driving School at Watkins Glen International! The Glen is a large track (3.5 miles) which is known for its elevation changes; there is over a 100 foot difference between the highest and lowest sections of the track. IRL cars started racing here in 2005, and the US Grand Prix ran here from 1967 through 1980!

This event is a special "intensive" HPDE, with a very limited number of student slots available. This event will sell out so we encourage you to register early and plan for a lot of track time. The first day will comprise multiple on track exercises designed to raise your situational awareness with one on one coaching, to bring your driving skills to the next level.  The second day will run an open track format where you will build on the skills developed on day one.

This event is open to drivers with at least 20 days of experience on their track driving resume. Once you register for this event please contact the Chief Instructor with your driving resume as this will be reviewed before you are accepted into the event.

There will be no car sharing possible at this event due to the Intensive format.

What is a Driving School?

The purpose of a driving school is quite simple: to improve your driving skills. We will emphasize the relationship of driver and machine, making them function in unison and giving you, as a student, the opportunity to learn your limitations and expand your capabilities, thus creating safe driving skills and habits in a controlled situation.

If you're new to driving on the race track, unfortunately, this isn't the event for you. Click here to learn more and find other schools you can participate in!

What is an Intensive Driving School?

Everything you love about honing your skills on the race track, taken to the nth degree.

Wait-List Rules

Due to the limited number of student slots available for Boston Chapter driving events, it is common for us to receive more registrations than we can admit, hence a Wait-List will be created. Applications will be admitted from the Wait-List on a first come, first serve basis.

Drivers

• Drivers must be at least 18 years old at the time of the event and possess a valid state, provincial, or international driver’s license.

Helmets

• All participants must wear helmets bearing Snell 2005 (M or SA) or later certification. No exceptions.

• A very limited number of Loaner helmets are available. Please contact the registrar using the "Contact Host" button on the right side of this page if you’d like to reserve one.

Seat Belts

Seat belts (same type for both driver and passenger) must be securely anchored to the floor and/or stock mountings. If your vehicle is equipped with racing harness/belts both driver and passenger harness/belts must be installed according to SFI/FIA specifications without modification and must NOT be faded, frayed, damaged, or significantly worn.

Vehicles

• Cars of all marques are welcome at Boston BMW CCA events.

• All cars MUST be inspected per the technical inspection form (see below).

• The following vehicles are NOT ALLOWED to be used in our driving schools:

1.     SUVs and Trucks (including BMW X-Series, Porsche Cayennes, etc.)

2.     Single seat vehicles (this includes all cars without a front passenger seat). All student cars must have a place for the Instructor sit.

3.     Open wheeled cars, such as formula cars

Tech Inspection

ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST DOWNLOAD A PRE-EVENT SAFETY INSPECTION FORM. You will be required to have a qualified individual/mechanic inspect your vehicle and verify its safety. This inspection should occur within three weeks of the event (also don’t leave until the day before the event). At the time of the inspection, the participant must sign the completed Pre-Event Safety Inspection Report.

The Pre-Event Safety Inspection Form must be presented to the Boston Chapter Tech Personnel at the track on the day of the event. The participant will not be allowed to drive the vehicle on the track without first presenting a signed and completed Pre-Event Safety Inspection Form. In addition, on the morning of the event our tech crew will perform a spot check of every vehicle

Note: Brake Fluid will be tested as part of the Pre-Event safety inspection. Brake Fluid must be no older than 6 months and not contain an unacceptable amount of water [greater than 2%] as determined by the chapter testers.  Track events will stress your brake system more than driving on the street and it is important that your brake system be in good working order.  Brake fluid with too much water in it will be a reason for not allowing the car on the track at the discretion of the tech inspectors) . See Tech Inspection form for details.

The Driving School participant is solely responsible for the condition of the vehicle to be driven to, at, and from this event. You are solely responsible for ensuring that your vehicle is safe before you come to the track.

Convertibles

Rules for CONVERTIBLES are as follows:

‘Convertibles’ are defined as cars with retractable tops, whether soft-top or folding hard-top.
‘Removable roof sections’ include targa tops and T-tops. These are characterized by part of a fixed body structure above the passenger compartment.

Participation Requirements - Convertibles
Convertibles are not allowed to participate in sessions driven at speed unless the car is equipped with the following minimum requirements:

  • An approved roll bar or roll cage. Both driver and instructor sitting up right with helmets are below the top of the roll bar.
  • Five (5) or Six(6) point harnesses for both driver and instructor where belts are properly routed.
  • Arm Restraints

Participation Requirements - Removable Roof Sections
Cars with removable roof sections are allowed provided that both driver and instructor sitting up right with helmets are below the top of the roll bar or roof line.

Exclusions - Cars equipped only with factory pop-up posts or similarly activated rollover protection are not allowed.

ALL convertibles must be approved by the Event Chair in advance. Please contact the registrar before the event to discuss your configuration. If the vehicle does not pass the on-site Tech Inspection with regard to the rules above, you will not be allowed to participate and no refund will be given. If you have an open convertible with an approved roll bar and we are not able to find an instructor who is willing to accompany you on the track, your entry fee will be refunded.
