How to Buy Your "Dream" Car on the Internet

Dick Dyer Mercedes

About this event

THIS EVENT HAS NOT BEEN CANCELLED.

You have been searching the internet looking for that car you have always dreamed of. And then you find one that is just right. It’s the right color, right year, and right model. But it is on the other side of the Mississippi. So what do you do?

If you have always wondered about buying a used car on line but haven’t quite made the plunge, sign up for our “Buying a Car on the Internet” event, to be held on Saturday, March 14th, in the meeting room at Dick Dyer Mercedes, Columbia, SC. The event will start at 11 am, with the presentation lasting approximately 2 hours.

Our main presenter is MBCA - Peachtree Section Vice President Gary Edwards. He writes a “Gary’s Garage” technical article for his section’s newsletter and is also a member of the Carolinas Section.  Hank Dyer will also talk about purchasing a car from a dealership using the internet. We will also have a tour of the Dick Dyer Mercedes facilities.

Gary is a life-long automobile enthusiast and has purchased a number of cars on eBay. “Say it’s late in the evening and you’re looking at cars on eBay. An auction for a 1994 Mercedes E320 cabriolet with 82,000 miles shows up with a very attractive “Buy It Now” price. Do you - Decide to bid on it? - Buy it now? - Ignore it and go on to the next listing? Well, since Peachtree Section Past President Daryl Williams told me that if I wanted a cabriolet I should buy one while the prices were still affordable, I hit “Buy It Now” and bought it sight unseen. Then a few months later I bought another car on eBay, and then another, and then another - and so on.”

Gary will include a discussion of a number of transactions done over eBay, detailing the good and the bad aspects of the transactions. Attendees will come away with an appreciation of the risks and benefits of buying a used car on line and a knowledge of ways to minimize the risk. He will cover tips and techniques for buying cars over the internet, focusing primarily on eBay, but will also mention other sites like bringatrailer, cargurus, autotrader, etc.

The sign-up fee will be $15 per attendee, which includes lunch.  For questions, call event planner Michele Stine at (914) 924-7948 or Gary Edwards at (757) 831-9556.
