Driver Skills - October 15, 2011

Bremerton Motorsports Park

About this event

Driver Skills Overview:

PNWR's Driver Skills event is a one-day course on the fundamentals of performance driving.  Appropriate for novices and experienced drivers alike, Driver Skills provides all participants with lots of seat time and personalized 1:1 instruction.  The day is divided into six primary segments:

  • Slalom.
  • Wet skidpad.
  • Threshold braking and accident avoidance.
  • Advanced slalom.
  • Handling oval.
  • Autocross.

Together, these segments improve students' ability to look ahead, control weight transfer, steer with the throttle, and brake effectively.  Run groups are small, which means that wait time between runs is minimal.  At the end of the six sessions, students are encouraged to apply the skills they've learned by taking free runs on a large autocross course.  The intensity level and focus on driving is high, but so is the fun level!

The Driver Skills participation fee is $65, including a hot lunch.  We have had to raise our event rate marginally over 2010 due to increases in track rental expenses.  Limited helmet rentals are available for $30, with the fee waived for those participants under 21 years of age.  Continue to the next page for more information...

Event requirements

Driver Skills Requirements:

  • Cancellations and refunds:  Please read and understand this policy before registering. Up until ONE WEEK before each event, you may cancel and receive a credit for a future event, good for 1 year. With less than 1 week notice, credit will only be given if we can fill the spot you're vacating.  NO EXCEPTIONS.  For additional information, email the event chair at driverskills@pnwr.org.

  • Car club membership:  Registration preference is given to members of the following car clubs, their spouses, and their family members: PCA, Alfa, Audi, BMWCCA, Corvette, Ferrari, Mini, and PDC.  If you are not a member of one of these local clubs, you may still register for the PNWR Driver Skills events.  If a given event is full with a waitlist, preference will be given to club members above non-club members.

  • Porsche ownership:  You do not need to own a Porsche to participate, nor do you need to bring a Porsche to the event.  All makes and models are welcome, and most Driver Skills events include a variety of different cars.

  • Age and driver's license restrictions:  You must be at least 16 years old and in possession of a valid driver's license at the time of the event.  A driving permit is not acceptable.  For participants under 18 years old, the participant and his/her parents must sign additional waivers and the participant must attend with at least one parent or legal guardian.  The additional waivers are available for download here: Waiver 1 (link); Waiver 2 (link). The parent or legal guardian is not required to participate, although we encourage families to participate together.

  • Helmets:  All participants are required to wear helmets rated Snell-2005 or better (e.g. Snell-2005, Snell-2010) during the event.  Either automobile (e.g. Snell SA-2005) or motorcycle (e.g. Snell M-2005) or karting (e.g. Snell K-2005) helmets are acceptable.  If your helmet does not have a Snell rating, it is not acceptable.  A limited number of rental helmets that meet the club's specifications are available for $30.  The helmet rental fee is waived for participants under 21 years of age.

  • Vehicle technical inspection:  Instructors will perform a basic technical inspection on-site at the event.  No professional technical inspection is requied prior to the event.  Details of the on-site inspection are available in the Inspection Checklist (link).  The most common failure items are: loose battery, underinflated tires, and unsecured objects in the passenger compartment or trunk.

  • Registering for others or for groups:  Each individual participant must have an account on this website, MotorsportReg.com.  Families, friends, and other groups are encouraged to participate together, but each individual participant must register under a separate MotorsportReg.com account.  Up to two participants may share a car, but again - each participant must register him/herself under a separate MotorsportReg.com account.
