3 Mile-SFR SCCA Open Test Race + Street

Thunderhill Raceway Park

About this event

Hey everybody! We are really looking forward to hosting you for the Free SFR members day - I wanna start out with answering a few questions we have gotten leading up to the event:

Who is eligible for this?: Dues Paying SFR members only - SFR does not need to be region of record, but you do need to be an SFR member to participate. You can go to the SCCA Site to add SFR as a region to your membership. We will be emailing people directly if as we get closer if we see folks still registered but not SFR members.

Do I need a comp license?: No we are not requiring a competition license to participate in this event, HOWEVER, we will not allow people with no track experience out into the closed wheel or open wheel test sessons (more on that below)

Will there be camping Saturday night?:  Yes, Thunderhill is staffing the gate for camping, but we will be holding entry until 5:30pm Saturday night. There will not be reserved paddock spots - I would encourage everyone to do the scary thing and paddock next to someone you do NOT know - we are a club and you might just make a new friend.

Ive never been on track before, what do I do?: We have had a number of people sign up for the track day with no previous track experience - in consideration of safety for all involved, and due to us not having an instructor infrastructure, we will not be allowing folks with no track experience out in open sessions with others, but will have dedicated lead-follow sessions for you. We also reserve the right to bump any participant into the lead-follow group if we feel it is appropriate.

Do I need to do any kind of tech inspection?: YES - you will be self-teching your own vehicles - you can find those forms here - Tech Forms - please have these filled out and ready BEFORE you come to registration to check-in. Remember, the self tech form is you signing off that you have inspected your vehicle and it is in fine working order to ensure not only your safety, but the safety of the other people sharing the track with you. YOLO-ing tech isn't cool, be considerate of all others attending is the only way we are able to continue to offer days like this. If you do not have an SA rated helmet, we will have them available for both sale and rental in the pro-shop.

Where do I check-in?: Check-In will be in the East Clubhouse starting at 7:00am - You will need to bring your Tech Forms, SFR membership card or SFR Member Number - and you will get a wristband and windshield dot.

Schedule?: The on-track Schedule can be found here - On Track Schedule - Please note that the drivers meeting is mandatory, if you miss the drivers meeting you will not be allowed on track until you listen to the spiel.

Groups will be broken down as Closed Wheel racecars, Open wheel racecars, Street Cars, and then Lead-Follow - Lead follow is open to all cars EXCEPT open wheel cars (we apologize if there may have been mixed messaging on this, its Matt's fault) - Passengers are allowed in Lead Follow only - we will allow passengers on a case by case basis in closed wheel test and street car based on driving experience and hearing another spiel after the drivers meeting. To clarify, we will only allow folks to take passengers outside of Lead-Follow if they have matching safety equipment for both driver and passenger, and have the verifyable driving experience (we use motorsportreg to check driver history and notes) that supports the experience and decision making necessary of taking responsibilty for another person.

If you have any additional questions please send them to Matt@thunderhill.com - we will get them answered as quickly as possible, and will do our best to accomodate people as much as possible but our focus for this event is safety and consistency so we dont have 80 people with 80 different ideas as to whats going on.

Standard Drivers Meeting notes:

  • All drivers must have a wristband on their left wrist, please show pit out when heading on to track.
  • All Passing is open for all groups, points are required in Street Cars, NO Passing in lead-follow – Don’t be that person who blocks on a test day
  • Today is not a race! Give yourself plenty of room, no high risk or low percentage driving.
  • 3 strike rule in effect – 2 off, 4 off (vegetation), spins, not giving points/taking passes without points, or any general tomfoolery with earn a driver a strike. 3 strikes, youre out. THIS APPLIES TO THE CAR, NOT THE DRIVER - you are in control of the vehicle, blaming the tires doesn't cut it :)
  • These are hot sessions, so that means you need to be at an appropriate pace while on track. Please no 50 mph cool down laps.
  • Tire scrubbing on the first lap is frowned upon – since these are open sessions, it just looks like erratic driving to the people around you
  • Safety gear – if you have it, wear it!
  • If you have to stop on the racetrack STAY IN YOUR CAR, unless upside down or on-fire.
  • If you do have to exit the vehicle on track, get behind hard barrier ASAP
  • Always comply with safety crews
  • Mind the blend line at pit out, there may be traffic coming from your left
  • Pit in is drivers right at 15, if you commit to Pit-In Blend line, and decide you wanna be on track, come down pit lane and pit out will send you back out, do not cross blend line back onto track
  • Pit lane Is part of the racetrack.
  • Pit Speed is 35 mph
  • Paddock speed is 15 mph or as fast as you would like to be hit by a car. No exceptions. This is your permission to yell at people to slow down if speeding through the paddock.
  • Paddock spills – Asphalt is $500 a sq ft. Please report fuel, oil spills WHEN THEY HAPPEN. Failure to do so with result in a damage invoice from the track.
  • Waste oil and antifreeze bins are next to the fuel station
  • Please take your broken parts, tires, fuel jugs with you, we don’t want them.
  • Track sound limit is 103db @ 50 ft
  • Overly aggressive driving, or drivers that are significantly off pace will be pulled off track.
  • Situational awareness is a requirement, not a luxury!

Be smart, be safe. See ya in the morning at 8:00am in the East Clubhouse!
