2019 Wabasha Cannonball

Mississippi River Valley

About this event

Never run a car rally before? This is the event for you! No equipment is required, other than your phone

The Wabasha Cannonball is a TSD rally designed to be fun for both beginning and experienced rally teams. It is a 120-mile tour through the fabulous back roads of western Wisconsin. The mostly paved roads of Pepin, Pierce and Buffalo Counties are twisty and hilly, and lots of fun to drive.

What makes this event special is the real-time GPS timing and scoring. This is the first time the Richta system has been used in Minnesota, and it’s a lot of fun. Just load the GPS app onto your mobile phone or tablet, and you’re ready to run. No need to make complex calculations or use expensive equipment - as you pass each checkpoint, your phone chimes and immediately displays your score. TSD rallying has never been easier!

This event is perfect for someone who’s never tried a TSD rally before, and those who don’t want to do timekeeping, since every checkpoint gives you instant feedback on how early or late you are. It’s all about having a great time driving fantastic roads! It uses a tulip-style format just like a stage rally. Some roads are unpaved, but they’re the tight and twisty kind, not at all rough.

The event offers four classes of competition:

  • Class A:  Dedicated rally computers (Timewise, etc.)
  • Class B:  Auxiliary odometer or GPS odometer app.  Calculation equipment is free, as long as it is not connected to an auxiliary odometer.
  • Class C:  Stock odometer, no GPS odometer.  Calculation equipment is free, as the only mileage input is manual.
  • Class D:  Seat-of-the-pants.  Stock odometer, but no calculation of time, speed or distance is allowed.

Event day registration is from 12:00 to 12:45 PM at Godfather's Pizza, 2000 Old W Main St in Red Wing, MN.  Cars begin on one minute intervals starting at 1:00 PM.  Route instructions will be handed out 20 minutes prior to your start time.

Event requirements

You must download the “Competitor - Richta Checkpoint” app to your phone or tablet before running the event. Search the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store for “Richta Competitor”. Download the app and open it. Click on the Wabasha Cannonball event and enter the event password “buffalo”. Enter your car number and a personal password. After logging in to the app, when you get near the stop sign in the Godfather’s parking lot, your GPS will chime and record your arrival. That indicates you’re set up and ready to go.

If your device doesn’t have a cellular connection, you’ll need a way to connect to the Internet, such as a WiFi hotspot, when you log into the app and when you reach the endpoint. Public WiFi is not available in these remote areas, so come prepared.
