USS Hornet Museum

About this event

SFBA Mercedes-Benz Club USS Hornet Museum Tour 6-22-2019 10am

The SFBA MB Club is proud to offer an informative and exciting docent-led group tour of the historic USS Hornet aircraft carrier, now permanently docked at the former Alameda Naval Air Station. Historically, the Hornet (CV-12) is the 8th US Naval craft to be named Hornet; she was put into service in 1943 and served in the WW2 South Pacific campaigns, include the Palau, Truk, New Guinea and Marinas Islands battles. After WW2 she was re-activated for the Korean War, and in the 1960's was the carrier that recovered the Apollo 11 and 12 astronauts after they returned from the moon. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, she features many WW2 and later static aircraft displays, along with exhibits from the Apollo NASA moon program.

We will tour the flight deck, hangar deck, and first deck with a docent; the tour usually lasts 2-3 hours, but members are welcome to stay on and explore exhibits at leisure. Lunch afterwards will be on your own; there are hotdogs and hamburgers etc. available at a concession stand on the Hanger Deck, but there are several nice restaurants including a couple of brew-houses nearby on the base and in the city of Alameda.

The address of the museum is 707 W. Hornet Ave., Pier 3, Alameda Point, Alameda CA 94501; there is unlimited free parking nearby the ship. We will all meet as a group at the foot of the gangway at 10am. As it is an actual naval vessel, the access is by a steep gangway; throughout the ship are ladders, low overheads, and high thresholds; wheelchair access is extremely limited.

Cost is $15 p/p.
