Turkeys in the Trunk 2015

Checkered Flag Porsche

About this event

Please join us for a Saturday of fun and camaraderie at our 6th annual Turkeys in the Trunk charity event on Saturday, 21 November 2015.  This event supports the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore in their effort to collect food for the Thanksgiving season at their Mayflower Marathon food drive, a weekend long effort to fill as many big rigs as possible with donated food for distribution to less fortunate local families.

Stuff a frozen turkey (or 1600 pounds worth if you're last year's winner) and other Thanksgiving food items in your trunk – or trunks for you Boxster/Cayman and 914 drivers – and head to Virginia Beach.

We’ll gather at Checkered Flag Porsche (a generous sponsor of this event) at 1PM, weigh-in everyone's stuff and enjoy some refreshments, then at ~1:45, we’ll drive in a Porsche caravan over to Pembroke Mall where the Mayflower Marathon is taking place to drop off the turkeys and other food items we’ve brought.  The member who brings the most food will win a prize.

Next, we'll head out for a short drive to Murphy's Irish Pub at 30th Street and Pacific Avenue at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront for some great food, drink and socializing.

Please note:  The goal of the Foodbank's Mayflower Marathon is to collect frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items and monetary donations.  Ideally, the food donated at the event can be turned into a fairly typical Thanksgiving meal for a person or family in need. The donated food is packed in boxes at the event by volunteers for distribution at the Foodbank beginning on Monday, November 23rd.  So, please consider this when you decide what to donate.  Cash donations are accepted at this event and you should make your check out directly to the Foodbank.  These are also reflected in FSR's total charity proceeds.

In the interest of fairness, and to keep with the intent of the food drive, the competition will include some guidelines.  First of all, the food has to be loaded into a Porsche.  We will have 2-door and 4-door categories for the heavyweight competition.  Also, the ‘judges’ will be looking for loose interpretations of the Marathon’s intent of collecting food for holiday meals - turkeys and the fixins’ are the goal; not low-volume/high weight bags of flour intended to bake the dessert pie or cases of soda to wash them down.

We hope to see you on this good day of giving, thanksgiving, and camaraderie to kick off the holiday season.  We request that you RSVP for the event through this site so we can get a head count for the Marathon and for the social event, which is on the club, after the fun run.  So hit the “Continue” button and sign up for a day of fun and charity!

For our northern and western area members, we invite you to make the drive south and join us.  Oceanfront rooms are cheap in November and you can walk across the street from Murphy's.  Make a weekend of it!
