RMM Public Track Day - Full Day

RMM is committed to ensuring a safe environment for all participants while on track together.

Prior to participating in an RMM Public Track Day, all drivers will be required to provide sufficient details of their previous racetrack experience.

The vetting process is the same for all participants, no matter the level of previous experience they possess.

Based on the driver’s previous experience, drivers will sign up for one of three groups—Novice, Intermediate, or Experienced.

Drivers that do not meet the prior experience pre-requisites listed for each grouping can obtain access through the completion of either a RMM Beginner Track Experience program, or a RMM High Performance Driving School. RMM driving schools provide the necessary driving education and safety training to join public open-lapping events at RMM. Check our calendar for available RMM Track Schools.

Our strict pre-requisites allow for all participants on track to know that they are surrounded by others with a similar level of experience.

NOVICE GROUP

Novice drivers may have had an extended period away from track driving, and may not be as familiar with driving lines or modern track procedures.

Novice Group participants can expect to drive at a safe pace, while learning the RMM circuit, and getting re-acquainted with track etiquette.

Novice Group drivers will be led by an instructor pace car in a “lead-follow” environment for the first session in the morning.

Novice Group passing will be permitted in all designated passing zones. RMM Track Day passing rules will apply.

We recommended inexperienced drivers select the Novice Group for their first track event until an instructor deems them prepared to advance to a higher skill-level group

NOVICE GROUP REQUIREMENTS

To participate in a Novice Group session, drivers must provide sufficient details outlining their experience in a minimum of ONE of the following:

· Completion of an RMM Beginner Track Experience Course

· Completion of an RMM High-Performance Driving Course

· Completion of 1-day accredited driving school (Example: Skip Barber, Jim Russel, Bob Bondurant, Spring Mountain, Area 27 Racing Academy, Allen Berg Racing School) (All programs subject to approval by RMM event organizer)

· 3 days of open-lapping experience at any racing circuit (within the past 5 years)

 

INTERMEDIATE GROUP

Intermediate Group participants are drivers who are confident in their driving abilities and are able to lap at a higher speed as they continue to build on their circuit experience.

First time participants to RMM in the Intermediate Group will begin the day with one full session of lead-follow. Subsequent sessions will be in an open-lapping format.

Intermediate Group passing will be permitted in all designated passing zones. RMM Track Day passing rules will apply.

INTERMEDIATE GROUP REQUIREMENTS

To participate in an Intermediate Group session, drivers must provide sufficient details outlining their experience in a minimum of ONE of the following:

· Completion of an RMM High-Performance Driving Course

· 1-day RMM public track day in the Novice Group (subject to approval)

· Completion of a 3-day accredited driving school (Example: Skip Barber, Jim Russel, Bob Bondurant, Spring Mountain, Area 27 Racing Academy, Allen Berg Racing School)

· 5 days of open-lapping experience at any racing circuit (within the past 10 years)

· Accredited race license holder (within the past 30 years)

 

 

 

EXPERIENCED GROUP

Experienced Group participants are drivers with an extensive amount of previous race track experience, who are fully capable of lapping at high speeds, while maintaining the driving line and proper driving techniques.

First time participants to RMM in Experienced Groups will begin the day with one full session of lead-follow. Subsequent sessions will be in an open-lapping format.

Experienced Group passing will be permitted in all designated passing zones. RMM Track Day passing rules will apply.

Drivers must show a consistent ability to safely maintain an appropriate level of speed and vehicle control to remain in the Experienced Group. Driver’s in the experienced group typically have participated in multiple open lapping track days at RMM. As a reference, drivers in the experienced group typically will have an average lap time of 1:52 or less in ideal conditions.

 

EXPERIENCED GROUP REQUIREMENTS

To participate in an Experienced Group session, drivers must provide sufficient details outlining their experience in a minimum of ONE of the following:

· Completion of an RMM High-Performance Driving Course (subject to approval)

· 1-day RMM public open lapping track day in the Intermediate Group (subject to approval)

· 10 days of open-lapping experience at any racing circuit (within the past 10 years)

· Accredited race license holder (within the past 15 years)

TRACK PROCEDURES

RMM Track Orientation

 

To sign up for an RMM Public track day, you will be required to complete the following-

 

1. Sign up through the motorsport registration portal.

2. Create a driver profile on motorsport registration.

3. Update your driver profile will sufficient details of your previous driving history. (for events not attended through the motorsport reg portal, provide a written detailed description of the previous events. Dates, Venue, Organizer details, Vehicle, etc)

4. Based on the driver history details you provided, choose a grouping that matches your previous experience. (Each participant’s experience level will be thoroughly reviewed by RMM staff to ensure they have signed up for the proper grouping)

5. Familiarize yourself with the RMM Track Orientation package outlining rules/regulations and track etiquette.

RMM Public Track Day FAQ’s

 

Q. How much track time is there per group?

A. The full day schedule allows for an estimated 120 minutes on track per group.
A. The half day evening schedule allows for an estimated 80 minutes on track per group.

 

Q. I don’t have ‘proof’ of my previous experience, what should I do?

A. If you have experience not listed on your motorsport reg driver profile, please provide as many details as possible under the “other driving history” page.

The more details, the better. Venue name, exact event dates, organizer details, vehicle used.

 

Q. I am worried that I will be driving with others participants who do not meet the same safety standards as I do.

A. All participant’s driving history is thoroughly reviewed once they sign up. You can be confident that our strict pre-requisites ensure a high level of safety for all on track participants.

 

Q. I signed up for an upcoming RMM public track day, and I noticed that I have been moved into a different grouping than what I signed up for.

A. After reviewing the participants previous driving history, sometimes it is necessary to move the participant into a more appropriate group until they have received an on track evaluation.

 

Q. Is the driver briefing mandatory?

A. Yes, all drivers must be present for the scheduled driver briefing at the beginning of the day. 

 

Q. I will not be able to make the scheduled driver briefing, what can I do?

A. Participants who have previously attended an RMM Public Track Day that are not able to attend the scheduled driver briefing are urged to inform the RMM Event Staff with sufficient notice to make alternative arrangements. (subject to approval)

 

Q. Are there approved helmets available for rental?

A. Yes, RMM has many sizes of approved Snell SA2020 helmets available for a $10 rental fee.

 

Q. Can I use my personal helmet?

A. Yes, as long as it meets or exceeds the Snell SA2015 rating

 

Q. My personal helmet has an M Snell rating, is this acceptable?

A. No, this helmet is designed for motorcycles.

 

Q. Other tracks allow me to use my motorcycle helmet, can I use it at RMM?

A. No. We have many sizes of Automobile SA2020 helmets available for rental.

 

Q. Autocross events allow me to use my motorcycle helmet, can I use it at RMM?

A. No. We have many sizes of Automobile SA2020 helmets available for rental.

 

Q. What previous “track day” experience is considered acceptable?

A. Track days at permanent road courses where the format is open lapping, NOT led by instructor pace cars, and drivers are able to pass.

 

Q. I have extensive motorsport experience not on road courses, is this acceptable?

A. As much as we value everyone’s passion for speed, other forms of motorsport that are outside of permanent road course automobile lapping events do not count towards acceptable experience. Example- drag racing, autocross, motocross, street racing, drifting, etc

 

Q. Why do you not count other forms of motorsport as acceptable previous experience?

A. We rely on drivers knowing the safety procedures surrounding road course lapping. (flags, entry/exit, passing, etiquette, etc)

 

Q. The racing school I attended is not on the list of approved previous experience, does it count?

A. Racing schools that are not on our “approved list” that teach open lapping etiquette and safety procedures may be accepted with approval from RMM Staff. Please reach out to us to inquire if the racing school you attended has an approved curriculum. You may be asked to provide a letter of recommendation from the specific racing school.

 

Q. I do not meet the specific requirements for the experienced group, but I do not want to move down a group, can I just sign up for the ‘faster’ group?

A. No, please leave your ego at home, and sign up for the group in which you meet the specific criteria.

 

Q. I am worried that I will be held up if I sign up for a ‘lower’ group.

A. After an RMM Staff member has completed an on track evaluation of your safety, driving abilities, and awareness on track, if it is deemed necessary, drivers may move into another grouping.

 

Q. I am on the cusp of meeting the requirements for a higher group, should I just sign up for the higher group?

A. No, sign up for the group that you meet the requirements for.

 

Q. Are there instructors available to teach me how to drive?

A. To keep the costs down for participants, instructors are not provided for each individual participant.
A. RMM performance driving schools are a great way to receive specific driving instruction.
A. RMM is able to provide private one-on-one instructors at an additional cost for participants who are wanting this type of service. Please reach out for details.

 

Q. What is a “lead follow” session?

A. Lead/follow sessions are designed to show participants the racing line and passing zones, in a safe and controlled environment. An instructor pace car leads a group of cars in single file format. The pace is determined by the ability of all drivers in the group, and is increased gradually throughout the session.

 

Q. Is the lead/follow session mandatory?

A. It is mandatory for drivers in the Novice and Intermediate group who have NOT previously attended an RMM Public Track Day to take part in one lead/follow session. Drivers who have previously attended an RMM Public Track day are not required to take part in a lead/follow session on their 2nd visit, but are welcome to if they want.

 

Q. Can I take a passenger with me on track?

A. Please review our RMM Passenger Policy

 

Participants may take passengers under the following circumstances only-

 

1. Passengers must meet the size/weight requirements put forward by the Alberta ministry of transportation for front seat passengers WITHOUT the use of a booster seat. https://www.alberta.ca/child-seats

2. Front seat passengers only.

3. The passenger must be afforded the same level of safety equipment as the driver. (If the driver has a 5 point safety harness, the passenger seat must also have a harness with head/neck restraint system)

4. Passengers are permitted in all “lead follow” instructor led, sessions.

5. Participants who have attended 5 or more RMM specific Public Track days in the Intermediate or Experienced group, and have been signed off by an RMM Staff member, may take passengers in any session.

6. Passengers are NOT permitted in convertibles without structural rollover protection when the session is not a “lead follow” format.

7. RMM Members who have been previously signed off by an RMM Staff may take passengers in all sessions.

8. Participants are expected to drive at approximately 25% lower speeds while carrying passengers.

9. Participants will immediately lose the permission to take passengers if they spin, drop any wheels off track, or exceed track limits.

10. Participants found driving erratically, unsafe, or trying to “break their lap record” while carrying a passenger will lose the permission to take passengers.

 

Q. Are there mechanical services available on site?

A. No, currently there are no services available on site. You are required to bring your own tools, jacks, air compressor, etc

 

Q. Can I get into the paddock before the event starts?

A. For events starting at 9am, the gates will not open before 9am. A. For events starting after 9am (Afternoon or night sessions) you may arrive up to 1 hour before the event start time. Depending on what event is taking place beforehand, you may need to wait to get into the paddock early.

 

Q. Is there a food truck or catering on site?

A. No, there will not be food available on site. Please be prepared to bring your own lunch/drinks, or take a quick drive into Carstairs(5 min away) to get your supplies.

 

Q. Is there fuel available on site?

A. No, we do not have fuel for sale. The closest fuel station is in Carstairs. The Shell station has 93 octane.

 

Q. Is there a sound limit on public track days?

A. Yes, the sound limit is 95db measured dynamically 15m from the track edge. If you are worried you may not meet sound limits, please contact the event registar to arrange a sound test of your vehicle before the event date.

 

Q. Are there lap times recorded?

A. No, our GPS system is for location tracking only, not for lap times.

 

Q. Does a half day public track night session count against a full visit in relation to the non-member access policy?

A. Yes, any event, half day or full day, counts as a single visit to RMM.

 

Q. Can I bring my truck or SUV?

A. No, Trucks or SUVs are not permitted for open lapping sessions.

 

Q. Can I bring my convertible?

A. Convertibles with structural rollover protection only, are permitted.
