RMM New Drivers Skills Clinic

Rocky Mountain Motorsports

About this event

RMM New Driver Skills is best suited for drivers with minimal time behind the wheel, the 3 hour new driver skills course at RMM is designed to teach drivers how to properly operate a vehicle. Learning how to operate a vehicle while navigating busy traffic scenarios can sometimes be too overwhelming. This course eliminates the need to focus on traffic while learning basic driving skills. Our safe, controlled, and open environment allows drivers to fully focus on developing their operational skills of a motor vehicle. Drivers will learn proper usage of the accelerator and brake pedal, steering techniques, how/when to use mirrors, and how to set their seating positions to optimize their vision. Our specifically designed exercises will teach drivers proper accident avoidance, parking proficiency, and reversing. The mechanical knowledge portion includes how to check the engine fluids, correct tire pressures and how to check them, as well as how to change a flat tire. Rest assured you will leave having a greater knowledge of the basic mechanical upkeep required to have your vehicle always running in the best condition. Driver requirements: Must be at minimum, an Alberta Class 7 license holder, or equivalent. Students should provide their own street-legal vehicle registered for road use or the Turn 17 Mustang Rental Program is available for this course.

Insurance:
Our cars are insured for the road and track, but like with any normal car insurance, there is an excess that you are liable for before the insurance takes over. So, in other words: you pay for the damage you cause to the car (Up to a maximum). This financial risk is normal in any form of motorsport, and while unavoidable, it is also part of the thrill of driving on track. However, there are steps you can take to reduce your risk, which are covered below.
• The basic excess (deductible) is up to a maximum of $45,000.
• This excess can be reduced to $5,000.00 with the optional track insurance package for $375.00.
How can I reduce my risk on track?
There are a few important steps you can take to reduce your risk of an accident on track:
• Your attitude and approach to driving the track. You should always drive carefully, within your limits, and drive defensively around other cars on the circuit. Watch what is going on around you at all times – but also concentrate on what you’re doing! Driving the circuit simply isn’t like a video game (this mistake is more common than you think!), and listen to our recommendations and advice. It takes hundreds of laps before you become familiar with the circuit, so don’t believe you can shortcut this and race on your first laps!
• Listen to your Instructor. RMM instructors are experiences professionals that will allow you to get the most out of your track experience.
• Excess buydown. There are options for reducing your excess (or deductible/liability) for the maximum you owe in the case of an accident.

FAQ

Q- I have a class 7 license that requires me to carry a right seat passenger with a class 5 license, will my parent/guardian be required to ride with me during the course?

A- Once on our premises, for the duration of the course, your right seat passenger will no longer need/be required/be allowed to ride in the vehicle with you. They will be able to relax in our clubhouse until the course is finished.

Q- I have a manual transmission vehicle, is this acceptable?

A- Our course does not focus on teaching proper operation of a manual transmission vehicle. Please only bring your manual transmission vehicle if you already have a moderate proficiency in operating a manual transmission.

Q- Will we be learning how to drive on the race track?

A- Absolutely not. There is no portion of this course that teaches/promotes/allows excessive speed.

Q- Will you be teaching me the rules of the road?

A- No, this course is not designed to teach you the rules of the road, but rather how to safely operate a vehicle.

Q- Does this course qualify me to receive a safe driver discount on my insurance?

A- No

Q- My child does not have their class 7 learners permit yet, but I want them to learn how to drive a vehicle. Is this ok?

A- No

Q- Do I need to bring a helmet?

A- No, helmets are not required, this is not a performance course.

Q- My dad doesn’t trust me to drive the vehicle on my own, can he ride with me during the course?

A- No, all our exercises are significantly controlled by trained instructors. Allowing the driver to be in the vehicle on their own allows for them to not feel too overwhelmed while learning.

Q- Can two drivers share the same vehicle?

A- No, the course is designed to optimize the seat time with a single occupant.

Q- Is this course a group class or one on one?

A- The course is a group setting with multiple instructors
