About this event
Modeled on the wildly popular Street Survival™ program for teens, the New York Chapter of the BMW Car Club of America is proud to announce an Adult Safety School to be held on Sunday, October 30th, 2011, in Uniondale, New York (Parking Lot 8).
Our skilled instructors will teach you in your car in a controlled environment while you find the limits of your vehicle as well as the limits of your own capacity as a driver.
Our vehicle handling clinic will teach you to:
- Observe the driving habits that you’ve developed over the years and formulate methods to improve them
- Learn how to manage the technological distractions that you encounter in your vehicle and on the road
- Use exercises incorporating emergency maneuvers, accident avoidance, and skidding in low-traction conditions.
- Help you to develop confidence and security rooted in understanding the limits of your vehicle in a safe environment
The cost of this all-day event is $75. This event is for BMWCCA members as well as non-members. Every make and model is welcome. Minimum age is 21. Helmets not required.
Event requirements
Please read all instructions below. All students must register at motorsportreg.com prior to the event, and must provide payment at registration time.
Documentation: All students must have a valid state-issued driver's license (NY, NJ, CT, for example), as well as proof of registration and insurance on the vehicle they use for the Adult Safety School. These items may be scanned and submitted at registration time and emailed to adultsafety_2011@nybmwcca.org, or a copy may be submitted on the morning of the event. If you have to change the vehicle from the one you registered, you must inform us by October 28th (48 hours in advance).
Tech Inspection: a general "technical inspection" of the vehicle will be performed by the instructors. Any vehicle deemed unsafe (e.g. excessively worn or bubbling tires, significant fluid leaks, broken safety equipment like seat belts) will not be allowed to participate and no refund will be provided. Now is the time to get that oil change for the winter and have your mechanic make sure your brakes and other safety components are in top shape prior to the school.
Mandatory age: this school is designed for men and women over 21. Update [28 Sept 2011]: We are not accepting applications for students under 21. However, we do encourage you to contact us at adultsafety_2011@nybmwcca.org so that we can keep you informed for when we set the date for our chapter's Street Survival™ program in 2012.
Car sharing: is allowed. The maximum number of students that can use one car is two students. Separate registrations for each student are required. If the car is a two-seater or convertible, then the maximum number of students is one. Soft-top convertibles are allowed but discouraged. Some High Center of Gravity (HCG) vehicles may be restricted. It is best that you use the car that you are most familiar with; this will maximize the benefit of the instruction you receive. However, if you have a different vehicle that you occasionally drive and would like to feel more confident in, by all means, use that vehicle instead.
Dress code: Long pants, no shorts. Close-toed shoes only; no sandals or open-toe shoes. Think comfortable and practical. It is recommended that students and their guests bring rain gear (like a poncho) in case it rains on the day of the event. The event will be held, rain or shine. No helmets or harnesses required.
Lunch: will be provided. As well, water will be provided. We recommend you bring along your own refreshments if you have any special requirements. Drugs and alcohol are strictly prohibited from this event.
