NEQ Winter Driving School 2010

Canadarago Lake or Algonquin Lake

About this event

  NEQ Winter Driving School 2010

The North East Quattro Club is proud to offer our second Winter Driving School in upstate NY!  This year the event will be at either Canadarago Lake in Richfield Springs NY or lake Algonquin in Wells NY.  We will let everyone know which lake as soon as we can confirm it, based on the thichness of the ice.
Attendance will be limited to 35 students and 20 Instructors in order to maximize the experience for the attendees.  There will be a waitlist in case of cancellations.
Many participants will be able to attend without the need for an overnight stay.
This event is not just for our hot-shot high speed track drivers! It is also for their teenage children and spouses. This is a superb opportunity for all of us to hone our winter driving skills in a safe and supportive environment with skilled instructors. The fun and camaraderie will be great!

This event will be held with the cooperation of AMEC which is the ice racing club centered around Central NY.

Participants must have a car which is in good condition and fitted with snow tires. The car need not be an Audi. Trucks and SUVs are acceptable as well. Participants must have a valid driver's license or learner's permit.  All participants (and those accompanying them) should be warmly dressed, with good boots, a warm hat and gloves or mittens. All participants must arrive at the venue at 8:30 AM for final registration. The event will run until 4:30 PM, with an hour off for lunch. The cost for each participant is $100, which includes lunch.
This should be an exciting venue and a little different from anything we have done before.  The school consists of braking and slalom exercises, skid pad and a 1 to 1.25 mile simulated road course. On the 200' skid pad, drivers will learn about under steer and over steer and find out how to steer and counter steer to control their car.   The slalom and brake area will be combined with a short ice driving course so drivers can discover the effects of vehicle dynamics as they negotiate the cones in the slalom and learn to brake under full control on the ice. The short ice driving course will give them the opportunity to put their newly learned lessons to good use as they wind their way around the twists and turns and back to the cone area.
Because we are subject to the whims of Mother Nature, the school could be cancelled the day before.  Dave Klock, the Event Master, wants everyone to realize this.  In case of a cancellation, we will be keeping everybody updated by e-mail. You can also use AMEC's website, icerace.com, to see what is going on.  If they are racing on Sunday, we will be running on Saturday.
Depending upon the lake we are on, facilities such as a restroom may be very limited. Dave will be working to secure a place close to the lake for bathroom facilities and a place to warm up.  No five star facilities here.
Art Mayhew, President of the NEQ would like this to be an annual event. AMEC has been very cooperative working with us on this. They are plowing the track on Friday instead of Saturday.   He greatly appreciates their assistance. Check out their website-you may want to stay and race with them on Sunday. Their tech rules and classes are on their website.
Back seat passengers can ride with the participants but no ''back seat drivers'' are allowed. Passengers pay $15.00 for the opportunity to ride for the day.  Invite your spouse, teenager or a friend!
