Tech Day - Exploring Hi-Tech Tools and the Tech Museum of Innovation

by Geoff Paulsen

What is TechShop?  TechShop is a community -based workshop and studio housing the latest in hi-tech computer-controlled tools.  My sister loves TechShop, and uses a laser to etch family photos into leather.  They also have a textiles section with an industrial sewing machine and a computer-controlled embroiderer.  And yes, the have an auto bay, complete with engine hoist and pneumatic tools.

For those who cherish hand craftsmanship, TechShop also has old-school tools like and English Wheel so you can hand-form a new fender for your 1937 Delahaye that you damaged while touring last summer.

We'll meet at 10:00 AM at TechShop for a tour, and watch its amazing new water-jet cutter carve a Mercedes-Benz Club logo from a slab of stainless steel.

We'll then walk over to an on-your-own lunch at a nearby downtown restaurant.

After lunch, we'll stroll over to the Tech Museum of Innovation, which is currently presenting its "Star Wars" exhibit.

Note:  On this particular day, the museum is also hosting preparatory meetings for its signature program - "Tech Challenge" for students, where teams compete to solve a technical problem for judging in April.  It's kind of like a science fair on steroids.  For 2014, it's "How to Harness the Wind".  Will a team beat Oracle's America's Cup winner?  In Silicon Valley, you never know... Checkout their web site, as interested students can register or walk in - see http://www.thetech.org.

Prepare to be wowed!
