The hills are alive with the sound of music on Mount Tamalpais

By Don Penney, Activities Director

The final collaboration between Rodgers & Hammerstein was destined to become the world's most beloved musical. When a postulant proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval Captain. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with their generosity of spirit, gradually captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. Upon returning from their honeymoon they discover that Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain's immediate service in their navy. The family's narrow escape over the mountains to Switzerland on the eve of World War II provides one of the most thrilling and inspirational finales ever presented in the theatre. The motion picture version remains the most popular movie musical of all time.

Most seating in this 4,000 seat stone theater is general admission, meaning that the seats are first-come, first-served. Often, people arrive early for the show and picnic together. You may bring cushions/blankets, sun protection, warm clothes (for chilly morning fog, water, snacks and beverages. In addition; water, coffee, snacks, ice cream, lunch, beer and wine are all available for sale.

You may not bring any pets of any kind except for service animals. Stadium seats (a pillow with a back) are the ONLY kind of chairs allowed in the theater. They are also available to rent ($5.00 or $10.00 dollars with a $10.00 deposit). They are very firm on this policy. Umbrellas are allowed before the show starts. In addition; there is no smoking on the mountain.

There is very limited parking at West Peak on the mountain and the lots typically fill before 11 a.m. on play dates. Free round trip Express shuttles leave approximately every 15 minutes from 10:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. from two locations in Mill Valley.
