MAX BMW Off-Road Riding School - L1

Hunter Mountain

About this event

MAX BMW Motorcycles is proud to offer Off-Road Performance School at Hunter Mountain Resort. Located in the heart of the Catskills, Hunter is the perfect venue for this program. It features great terrain and riding areas created just for this school, a first-class hotel and spa and is easily accessible from everywhere in the northeast.

Riding your own dual sport BMW our two-day program is designed to maximize every rider's ability on dirt, gravel or other non-paved surfaces. Bill Conger, Max Stratton and Ben Stratton (all graduates of the BMW Motorrad Off-Road Academy in Germany) will be instructors for these schools.

Each day includes a full day of riding instruction. Riding includes drills on dirt, gravel, water and grass and excursions up and around Hunter Mountain and the surrounding area.

LEVEL 1 COURSE

In this course, we will start with basic items such as proper riding position and work through a progression of skills exercises to help you become more confident on your bike on different surfaces. We will cover advanced topics such as how to climb and descend steep hills, riding over obstacles, and recovery techniques for large bikes.

Riders also will be able to put their newfound skills to use on a dual sport ride with the instructors. Riders are required to wear FULL protective gear including helmets, gloves, riding jacket, riding pants, and boots that protect the ankles. Knobby tires are a must (we have special pricing for tires and labor for students who are paid and signed up for the class.) This course is intended for intermediate to advanced road riders, but you do not need to have any prior dirt-riding or off-road experience.

In order to provide a personalized level of attention, class sizes are limited. Take advantage of this unique opportunity and reserve your spot early as our previous events have sold out.

Event requirements

BIKE:

Make sure you have a safe reliable dual sport bike.

Tires must by knobby style tire we recommend the Continental TKC80 or Metzler Karoo.   Metzler Tourance, Michelin Ankee, or Heidenau tires are not suitable for the terrain at Hunter.

Tread dept should be greater than 50%

Make sure your bike has a strong battery since we will be starting and stopping the motorcycles all day.

If your bike is water cooled make sure all fans and cooling systems are functioning properly.  We will be riding slow in hot conditions for two days.

Luggage and tank bags must be removed for class.  GPS, radar, accessory lights should also be removed to prevent damage.

GEAR:

Proper protective riding gear is very important.

Jackets and pants should be breathable most of the class is slow speed in open areas with no shade.  Road riding suits without vents will make for a long day.

At minimum boots must cover the ankle.  We recommend a full motocross style boot to protect your feet and ankles from injury.  GS pro Rally boot is our favorite boot. (special pricing for students available)

Helmet a vented motorcoss helmet is recommended like the Arai XD or VX pro.  Full face or flip front road helmets are allowed but tend to be hot.

Gloves are required.

RIDER:

Drink lots of water days prior to the event.  If this is your first time off road you will be working harder than ever maneuvering your bike through difficult terrain.  There is plenty of help to pick up your bike and we always remain close to the main lodge so it's very easy to return back if you need a break.
