If you've never done this before - what are you waiting for? Not ready to be an In-Car Coach? Not sure what this is all about? That's OK!! C'mon out and volunteer to help us run the event.  There's always plenty to do!

In order to be an Instructor / In-Car Coach, we require you to have some experience with high performance driving events or autocross events.

In Car Coaches should have at least:

  • 5 years of BMW / SCCA Autocross
  • 2 years of High Performance driving events, or some racing experience
  • 2 years of Tire Rack Street Survival coaching experience (teen driving schools)

Volunteer Staff help out with setting up traffic cones used in the driving exercises, assisting with registration, setting up for lunch, making sure we stay on schedule throughout the day, etc.  Anyone who has an interest in helping with the variety of tasks we need to accomplish throughout the day is welcome to sign up as a volunteer.

We need about 20 instructors for the event and 15 volunteers/staff.

Event requirements

The Highway Safety Program looks like this:

Morning sessions

  • THRESHOLD BRAKING: Coaches teach the proper techniques of car control while using maximum braking in a straight line and while the car is in a turn.
  • SLALOM  : Medium speed serpentine course through safety pylons laid out to highlight car control methods, coaches are highlighting eye - hand movements, “ocular driving skills” and car control
  • SKID PAD : A wet, slippery circular course used to coach the entrants on loss of traction and demonstrate front and rear skid recovery techniques. Coaches will teach how to control understeer (when front tires lose adhesion) and oversteer (when rear tires lose adhesion.)

Afternoon Sessions

  • LAPS AROUND THE JEFFERSON TRACK: The afternoon sessions will be spent with you driving your car around the Jefferson track, again with your instructor in the car. You are given an introduction to racing lines and racing techniques at a controlled pace. Speeds are limited to 70 MPH.  Instructor assisted passing is allowed.  Cars are staged so they are separated by a large distance.

We would prefer that afternoon coaches have an HPD background but will work with experienced autocross coaches and again, pair you with experienced HPD coaches first.

NOTE: Speeds are limited to 70 MPH for this event.
