RMC BMW CCA Spring 2012 School for Club Racing

High Plains Raceway

About this event

Never before, has our chapter held a BMW Club Racing School. We have been lagging way behind other BMW chapters that have held these exciting schools. Well, not any more. We shall be holding a BMW Club racing school in conjunction with our regular performance driving school at High Plains Raceway on May 19 and 20, 2012.

** Note: if you are looking for the BMW driving school and are here by mistake, click 0ere to get to the driving school registration:  http://www.motorsportreg.com/index.cfm/event/event.advert/uidEvent/2873953B-E845-8BE9-8B543272C4D63B1D

We shall be enjoying expert, experienced help from BMW Club Racing. Yes, National, is sending Scott Hughes to chair the racing school, and Bruce Heersink as the race lead instructor. Both are  experienced BMW club racers, and have held held numerous racing schools for various chapters all over the USA. And Bruce is bringing his team and racecars with him. We are indeed honored that Club Racing is sending their senior instructors to show us the ropes.

We used to have BMW Club Racing in Colorado. This was thanks to the generosity of the Porsche Club of America. But our BMW racing suffered from lack of support. However, there are a lot more BMW racecars in Colorado than there used to be. And more are being built. At present, the BMW racers enjoy the sport by racing with RMVR, SCCA, and NASA. The plan is to hold an annual BMW club race, starting in 2013, and drawing racers from these clubs and elsewhere. Believe me, there is absolutely nothing to compare to a race group that consists entirely of BMWs. The camaraderie is unbelievable.

Our purpose is to give you the opportunity to drive your car at speed and to experience more of the potential of the unique combination of car and driver. Our High Performance Driving Schools are real schools for anyone 18 or over with a valid driver’s license. Students will alternate between classroom sessions and time on the track with an instructor. The individualized instruction is a key to this program that has been developed over decades, and compares very favorably with commercial schools costing many times more. Our experienced instructors have come from racing, autocrossing and BMW CCA schools. They can help you develop your potential.

A BMW CCA membership isrequired to participate. To join, go to www.bmwcca.org or call 800-878-9292.

Candidates.

We plan on drawing club racing students from our existing pool of instructors. We have some very talented drivers in this group. It is a good opportunity for an instructor to step up to a slightly higher plane, and get a feel for club racing. The same applies to our A group students. We have a lot of talent there, and for sure, a number of A group students will aspire to club racing.

There are a number of racers who own BMW racecars, but have never raced in a BMW club race. They started racing with SCCA, NASA, etc, after BMW club racing died in Colorado. We invite you to join us at the racing school. It is the easiest way to get a BMW competition license. And besides, you might learn something new. If you acquire your BMW license at this school, then you will be set to go BMW racing at our planned club race at HPR in May 2013.

You will be welcome too if you are a bit lacking in seat time, but you are already building your own BMW racecar. If you show serious dedication and intent to go club racing, then we shall seriously evaluate your application.

The club racing school will be limited to 25 students. It will not be on a first come, first served basis. Each applicant’s credentials will be evaluated, and those deemed most suited to club racing, will be accepted. Perceived desire to proceed further than the racing school, to actual club racing, will be favorably looked upon.

Subject matter

The classroom instruction assumes that you already know how to performance drive. It concentrates on racing aspects like awareness of those around you, expected behavior on the track, flagging, group starts, 13 / 13 rules, car eligibility, and mental preparedness. It even covers how to buy a racecar. It is a very intensive course. When you are not on the track, then you are in the classroom. Every minute of both days is utilized.

Instruction.

The race school instructors are drawn from experienced club racers. Each instructor has two students. Instructors do not ride in the car with you. They watch your every move from the bleachers. They will evaluate your response to guidance and your behavior on the track. They need to make sure that they, and other racers, would be comfortable on the track with you. Loose cannons, dive bombing into corners, will not be successful.

 Saturday evening buffet

A dinner buffet will be offered at the track on Saturday after the driving is over. It is a "Hog Heaven BBQ' meal and the cost is $17.

Event requirements

PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE DOCUMENT BEFORE YOU REGISTER. It contains valuable information about the school, registration, and the rules of the day. Forms mentioned in this text are immediately available via the links; however, all of them are available as a group when you go to the forms page.

Car eligibility.

Our racing school has a great advantage over the other clubs. You can try it out, without the expense of buying, or renting a racecar. You can bring the same car that you normally take to the regular schools, and drive it in the racing school. So, you get the ‘feel’, before you buy. It does not have to be a BMW for the racing school, but it does have to be a BMW, or Mini, for club racing.

For the school you do not need a log booked racecar, seat harness, racing suite, window nets, roll cage, fuel cell, etc, etc. You do need a tech inspection, and a legal helmet (Snell 2005, or newer). The requirements are the same as a regular BMW driving school. In BMW club racing however, you do need to meet strict safety regulations, so you should review the safety regulations before actually committing to purchasing a racecar.

Registration

Registration for the racing school will open at the same time as the regular performance driving school. This will be March 24, 2012 at noon.
Racing School registration will close on April 29, at midnight.
Last day for refunds is also April 29, 2012.

** NOTE: There will be no cross pollination of registration between the two schools. They are separate. If you register for one school, and then change your mind and want to register for the other school, then you have to cancel, and join the back of the queue for your second choice.

A technical inspection is required of all cars, and must be completed prior to the school. This is to check the condition of your vehicle, especially the parts that will be critical for an event like this. Tech inspection forms must be downloaded from theforms page. Most safety equipment will be checked: tires, brakes, brake fluid, battery hold-downs, seat belts and more. If there is any doubt about the condition of your equipment, have it replaced. New tires are not required or necessarily recommended. The inspection can be completed by your mechanic (expect a charge) or there will be FREE technical inspections at the following times and locations. Be sure to bring your helmet to the inspection, as it will also be checked. DO NOT PUT THIS OFF! Be sure to give yourself time in case something is found that must be fixed.

Please complete the medical information form that will be available to the on-site medical personnel in case of an emergency. Please fold the form in thirds, tape and write your name on one end for quick access. These forms are for emergency use only, and are shredded after the event. Separately from this form, you are required to inform us of any condition that might impair your ability to perform the tasks expected of a student in this school, impede your ability to communicate with your instructor, or that would impair your ability to exit the vehicle in case of an incident. If you are pregnant, we require the approval of your physician and that your spouse also sign a waiver.

Cost

This is a two day event with intensive classroom instruction, and four track sessions each day. The cost, for both days, is $325.00.

More information

The BMW Club Racing web pages have extensive information for the club racer, and for those persons who are just getting started. Go towww.bmwccaclubracing.com and click on ‘New racers’ and then on ‘Getting started’. You can find any information you are looking for on the web site, including the 2012 racing rules and the specs for the racecars.

 School tips

To maximize your track time and insure you get adequate instruction, the event is run on a tight schedule. Adherence to the schedule requires your cooperation and will allow us to get through the preliminaries quickly. You must arrive at the track no later than 6:30am.  You must stop at the gate to sign the waivers and check-in. All individuals entering the track property must sign the Release and Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement. You must read it carefully and understand what you are signing. We also recommend that you show and discuss the waiver with your spouse. Minors are allowed in the facility, but a parent or guardian must sign a Minor's Waiver Form on their behalf at the track, or it may be signed in advance if notarized.

After check-in, proceed immediately to the paddock area and unload everything from your car, glove compartment, storage bins and trunk. Please remove floor mats, loose change, radar detectors and everything that is not firmly attached. A properly secured spare tire may remain in the car if you choose.

Be sure to arrive with a full tank of fuel. Air is available at the track. We are unsure of fuel availability at the track, but if available it's expensive. Lunch is available for purchase at the track. There will be no time to drive to Byers and back. Bring plenty of water (1 gallon per person) or other hydrating drinks. Water is best! Also bring a folding chair, hat, sunscreen, warm clothes and protection from the wind and weather.

Be ready to attend the mandatory Driver's Meeting at 7:45AM. This is the most important meeting of the day!
