Spring 2010 DE/Inst Clinic

Virginia International Raceway

About this event

Registration is closed and the event is completely full.  If you want to sign up for the DE Intro, please email the registrar (link on right), or just show up with $50 and your completed tech form no later than 11AM on Saturday and you can sign up in person.  Event forms, information documents and the schedule are posted on the Documents page of the FSR website, via the link below.

Reminders:  All drivers (DE Intro and instructors included) must have a tech inspection by a professional mechanic or club approved inspector prior to the event.  No M rated helmets, SA2000 or newer (this is the last year for SA 2000 helmets, next year will be SA2005 or newer).  We hear SA2010 helmets will be available in October.

Please join us for our Spring 2010 Drivers Education (DE) and PCA National Instructor Clinic at VIR in Alton, VA.  We will be running the Full Course all 3 days, but please note the changes to our normal schedule/format below.

This event is open all drivers 18 and over with a valid US-issued driver's license. There is no club affiliation requirement or restriction on car make/model (no trucks, please).

Friday, 21 May:  PCA National DE Instructor Clinic - the clinic is open to all instructors desiring a PCA National DE Instructor certification.  PCA membership is not a pre-requisite for attending and receiving PCA National Certification.  This day will otherwise be open to solo drivers only for regular DE track time (i.e. White group and above).  This track time will also be available for already PCA Certified DE Instructors volunteering to serve as "Instructor Mentors/role players".  We invite experienced drivers interested in becoming instructors and also our experienced instructors to attend and serve as "instructor mentors" and also receive PCA certification.

Saturday and Sunday 22-23 May:  Open to all groups

PCA Instructor Clinic: conducted by Pete Tremper, PCA National DE Chair, it will consist of four 45-60 minute classroom sessions, each followed by a 45 minute on-track session.  There are two categories of attendees at the clinic: (1) "Candidate" - experienced drivers that desire to become instructors, and (2) "Mentor" - those already serving as instructors (PCA membership not required) that desire to receive a PCA certification.  This latter group will attend the entire clinic and serve as mentors to the instructor candidates during the clinic, serving as role players during the on-track sessions.  Additionally, we invite our instructors who are already PCA Certified to augment our group and also serve as mentors/role players to our instructor "Candidates" during their on-track sessions.  In return, we'll offer you ~2.5 hours of student free track time on Friday.  If you are an experienced driver interested in becoming an instructor "Candidate", please contact our Chief Track Instructor for this event, Alex Bell, at cti@fsrpca.org.  Please have your driving “resume” available so he can determine your eligibility to attend the clinic.  You will need his approval in order to register for the clinic.  Experienced instructors who are on the FSR instructor list and attending the clinic as "Mentors" to get a PCA Certification do not need this approval.  For more information on this process and clinic requirements, please go to the FSR DE Documents page HERE.  Space in the clinic is limited, so don’t wait until the last minute to register.

An instructor will be assigned to Green and Blue Group drivers for Saturday and Sunday.  If you are signing up as an Intermediate Solo or Advanced driver, you will be asked for references if you have not run with FSR before.  There will be classroom sessions for Green and Blue groups as well.

Registration fees (Please review these very carefully to ensure you make the right choice):

Solo Driver Registration (3 days) - $375

For non-instructor solo group drivers:  Includes ~2.5 hours of track time on Friday, then a standard DE schedule on Saturday and Sunday (~90 minutes per day).

Student or Solo Driver Registration (2 days) - $275

This is the only option for Green/Blue group drivers and the 2 day option for solo drivers that can’t make it on Fri:  Includes ~90 minutes per day of track time (instructed for Green and Blue groups, along with one AM classroom session per day).

Instructor Clinic attendees (3 days) - $250

For Instructor "Candidates" and "Mentors" who are attending the clinic in order to receive a PCA Certification: Includes PCA Instructor Clinic/certification plus at least one additional hour of track time after the clinic on Friday, along with instructor registration for Saturday and Sunday with a student assigned (instructing Saturday and Sunday is part of the requirement for certification), and lunch all three days.

Instructor/Instructor Mentor Registration - For PCA National Certified Instructors ONLY (3 days) - $100

For PCA National Certified Instructors who will offer their services as mentors/role players for the clinic attendees.  These instructor mentors will role play as students during clinic track sessions, driving their own cars with instructor candidates riding along instructing.  They do not need to attend the classroom sessions.  Includes ~2.5 hours of “student free” track time on Friday (which includes time while clinic attendees are in class).  Includes instructor registration for Saturday and Sunday with a student assigned and lunch all three days.  If you're PCA Certified but don't want to mentor on Friday, then please sign up for the standard Instructor Registration below.

Instructor Registration (3 days) - $225

For instructors who are not participating in the Instructor Clinic on Friday.  Includes ~2.5 hours of “student free” track time on Friday, instructor registration on Saturday and Sunday with a student assigned, and lunch on Saturday and Sunday.

Instructor Registration (2 days) - $100

Instructor registration for Saturday and Sunday with a student assigned, includes lunch on Saturday and Sunday.

DE Intro (one session) - $50

Are you new to DE and on the fence about whether Driver’s Education is for you?  FSR now offers a great opportunity for those wanting to get a taste of DE without signing up for the entire event.  For a $50 fee, we’ll get you out on the track in your car with an instructor for a single session mid-day on Saturday.  Standard DE safety requirements apply, so you’ll need a Snell SA 2000 or newer rated helmet.  FSR does not have loaner helmets, so recommend borrowing from a friend.

The Sleep Inn – Danville has offered us a group rate.  Should you decided to stay there, tell them you’re attending the PCA - First Settlers event to get the special rate.

Event requirements

  • This event is open all drivers 18 and over with a valid US-issued driver's license. There is no restriction on car make/model (no trucks, please).  Cars must pass technical inspections (see links below) to show they are safe for track use.  Drivers must wear an approved helmet and proper clothing (see links below).  All the following information, in more detail, is available via links in the DE section of the FSR website (link below) and will also be in the confirmation package that you will receive via email before the actual event.
  • When registering, please select your experience based on the following as a guide.  We request that you keep your MotorsportReg experience profile up to date, particularly which run group you ran with in your most recent events, to assist us in making accurate run group assignments.
    • Green: Novice and Beginner (0-3 events)
    • Blue: Novice/Intermediate (3-10 events)
    • White: Upper intermediate and advanced (10-40 events with solo exp)
    • Black: Upper advanced/instructor overflow (40+ events)
    • Red: Instructors
  • Your preferred car number will be requested in the car info section of the registration form.  If there are repeat numbers within a run group, we'll give priority based on registration date and assign alternate numbers as appropriate, so please ensure your second and third choices are in your profile.
  • This event will run rain or shine.
  • This is NOT a racing event or racing school.  Our events focus on learning proper high performance driving techniques that will translate well into both street and track use.  Our goal is to provide a safe environment where all participants have fun and return home with their vehicle in the same condition as when they arrived, but having learned something new and made a few new friends.  We pride ourselves on our low-key, low stress events that will make you want to join us again.
  • All helmets must be Snell SA2000 or later specification.   We do not accept M rated helmets of any year.  We do not have loaner helmets available.
  • All cars must have numbers at least 8 inches high on each side of the car in a bright, easy to read contrasting color.  Shoe polish on windows, although a less preferred method, is permitted, but the color must be bright and visible.  Blue painters tape is acceptable, but must be visible (light green painters tape is also available for darker cars).
  • All participants (instructors included) must have a tech inspection completed prior to the event and bring their completed tech form with them to the track.  The inspection must be performed by a qualified mechanic (i.e. a professional) or club tech inspector and the form filled out, signed and stamped by the mechanic/inspector. The form will be turned in at track tech.  The tech form and specifics about how tech is conducted at the track for each run group will be in your confirmation package.  You can download the tech form and other DE documents  HERE.
  • Convertibles must have a roll bar or hoop extenders and pass the "broomstick" test.  For late model Porsche 911s (i.e. 996/997), a factory hardtop obviates the need for a traditional roll bar.
  • All participants, staff, and guests must sign the event insurance waiver at track registration.  Everyone will also be required to sign VIR’s waiver at the main entrance when they arrive.
  • Camping can be arranged through VIR.  Please contact them directly for info.
  • Wristbands will will be issued at registration
  • Please bring your own copies of the required forms - which will be listed in the confirmation package.
  • A link to event information will be emailed to all registered participants approximately two weeks before the event, which will include the event schedule, run group and instructor/student assignments.  If you have an issue with your group assignment, please contact the Registrar immediately after receiving your assignment.
  • More information is available in the Documents section of the FSR website.

Instructors:  If you instructed with FSR in 2008/9, you should have the “Instructor Entry” option available to register on the online registration form.  If this option is not available and you have instructed with us in the past, please email the registrar BEFORE YOU REGISTER so that we can add you to our instructor list.  Once you hit the "pay" button, we can only offer you future credit (full amount) or you'll have to wait for a refund check for the difference between the entry fees (minus 4.5% processing fee).  If you have never instructed with FSR, please provide your credentials/references via email to the Registrar or Chief Track Instructor BEFORE YOU REGISTER.  We will then add you to our list and the instructor option will become available to you online.  In either case, you must have FSR on your list of clubs in your Motorsportreg.com profile for the registrar to add you as an instructor.  If you have any questions or are not sure how to proceed, please email the registrar and we'll hook you up.  Thanks for your cooperation.

Cancellation/Refund Policy:  For cancellations on or before May 14, refunds issued by check will incur a 4.5% cancellation fee; refunds issued as motorsportreg.com credit for a future FSR event will be in full.  Cancellations after May 14 receive a 50% refund, regardless of method; no refunds after May 17.  Refund requests must be made in writing or through the motorsportreg.com cancellation button on the "My Events" page.  No-shows will not receive a refund.
