A city the size of Atlanta, GA, typically has hidden treasures unknown to many. MBS Motors Inc., in Duluth, GA, is indeed one of them. Owner Hans Vorpahl started MBS in 1971 and operated it for a number of years on LaVenture Drive in Chamblee, GA, just off Buford Highway. Several years later, he purchased land in the Atlanta suburb of Duluth, GA, and built an exceptionally nice Mercedes-Benz repair facility in 1995 that would serve his clients well into the future, and continues to do so to this day.
As you will experience on February 22,2014, MBS Motors is a most interesting facility in many ways, not the least of which is that it houses the Mercedes-Benz classic and vintage collection Hans has built over the years, which now includes some nine outstanding examples, ranging from a 1933 380K Cabriolet to a 1970 280SE 3.5 Coupe. Three of them – his 1959 300SL Roadster, his 1935 200 Cabriolet, and his 1933 380K Cabriolet – he entered and drove in “The Great Race” on separate occasions, proving that he did not intend the cars in his collection to be “trailer queens”. Each Mercedes-Benz in the collection has its own history of course – one of them was located and purchased by Hans in East Germany – about which you’ll learn more when you attend in February. Hans and his son, Axel, are credited with restoring the cars in the collection, so both can speak volumes on the subject from personal experience. In fact, Axel is presently doing a sympathetic restoration on a 1950’s Mercedes-Benz 190 for a customer. And to add interest during your February visit to MBS, a couple of them are still in the restoration stage.
Registration will start at 8:30 a.m. We will start the program promptly at 9:00 a.m., with one hour for everyone to explore the collection and the facility, where you will be free to visit at your leisure various “stations”, with each having a facilitator. From 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. (prox.), we will have a discussion comprised of some members of the MBS Motors staff, noted Mercedes-Benz restorer Art Thumwood, owner of Art’s Star Classic Restorations in Richmond Hill, GA (website is www.artsstarclassics.com ), David Latham, owner of Bud’s Benz (website is www.budsbenz.com ), a staff member from Sports and Imports, Inc. (website is www.sportsandimportscollisions.com ), which will also have a table set up to acquaint you with their full range of services and offer advice on specific questions you may have. Each of the panel members will address common questions (presented to them in advance) and great tips regarding the overall care of our various M-B models. And to wind up a fun and informative Saturday morning, we have a very special lunch planned. Those of you who have had the pleasure of dining at Kurt’s Bistro in Duluth are familiar with the outstanding European cuisine they serve…and for those of you who have not yet dined at Kurt’s Bistro, do yourself a big favor and go to their website at www.kurtsrestaurant.com . Kurt will personally be grilling Brats and Sausages for us, along with some authentic German potato salad and scrumptious German pretzels that will result in a very satisfying, warm, and hearty February lunch. But wait, there’s more…Sean Eason of Sports and Imports does outstanding desserts as a hobby for friends and family, so you’ll have some great desert selections to finish off that hearty meal.
