Drifting/wet handling event

Michelin's Laurens Proving Grounds

About this event

http://www.michelinpg.com/location.html

We’re going drifting again!!  As some of you know, through the last few years we’ve worked with Mike Renner from the BMW Performance Center to put together several “wet-handling” events on the ½ mile skid pad at the Michelin Proving Grounds near Laurens, SC.  Those were big fun with all the drivers learning much about car-control while they practiced drifting on the skid pad.

Mike and the Sandlapper Chapter are set for another session at the Michelin Proving Grounds facility on the afternoon of 11/12/16.  To offer something different, this event will take place on their wet handling course as opposed to the skid pad we have used in the past.

The wet handling course is  9/10 of a mile.  To get a better visual of it, you can think “road course layout” with sprinklers and low grip asphalt.  It is an excellent opportunity for drivers to develop a keen sense of feel for their cars and tires.

Event requirements

We have opened another session. 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Per Mike Renner, “the track can be driven drifting through the corners or concentrating on going as fast as possible at the limit of the tire.  I would envision doing a bit of both and for extra fun we would have a timed competition at the end of the day. We should be able to run three to five cars on the track at once, so there will be plenty of track time.  By the way, the track would be ours from 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM so we will need everyone to arrive no later than 12:30 PM to be prepared, sign waivers, and maximize our track time.  To maintain a high level of driving time and quality of the event, the maximum number of cars accepted for the event will be 16 and the price per car (Two drivers could share track time with one car) is $299.  This is an ideal opportunity for Sandlapper members to learn more about car-control, handling dynamics, and how your individual car handles in a wet environment."

It is advised that you all eat lunch before arriving at the Michelin facility at 12:30 PM.  There’s nothing to eat or drink there, so eat before you arrive and bring along any snacks or drinks you desire for later in the day. There are bathrooms available.
