I started by crewing for a friend, then decided I should just try racing, guess I have taken to it. Currently race an RX7, had a Pinto, a Capri, and a Fiat 850. I worked 16 years for SOVREN in driver services, the 4 years before that did timing and scoring. I currently help Marc VonStubbe with course marshalling and typically help set and take down the track at our Pacific events. I have been involved in Conference for years; where I have my license. For Conference I was the license director for 2 years, and timing and scoring for 4 years. I currently am on the Conference contest board (for 15 years) and a currently a board member. When I have free time I work turns.

There are three things I see that need to be addressed. One, let the cars in, if we can. Two, race in the vintage spirit, or get strung up. Three, we need more year end trophies; make them for the car classes, not just groups.

Thank you for considering me for the Competition Committee.

Fred Harnishfeger

I have been with SOVREN about 20 years and a racing driver for over 10 years. I know that SOVREN is not about any one particular car, driver, or even group of cars. For me SOVREN is all about the attitude of the drivers, camaraderie, friendly competition and the simple joy of being on the track racing historic and vintage cars. This SOVREN attitude is what I will endeavor to put first in any decision I make as one of your Competition Committee members.

I currently serve on the Marketing Committee for SOVREN and I am always an ambassador for SOVREN in encouraging people I meet to come see a race and join in the fun. I have attended other car events with my race car and manned booths and answered questions about SOVREN. About 20 years ago I was involved in drag racing when I was told about the NW Historics happening the following weekend. I attended that event and responded to the call for volunteers. I thought that with my years of experience as a bus mechanic and truck driver I would fit best with the Tech crew and so it began. I also had experience as a volunteer working corners with IRDC. Currently I am also a volunteer instructor at the Tire Rack Street Survival School.

AJ Johnston II

Hello all. My background in racing is a follows. I grew up in a racing family. My parents ran Roebling Road and my dad was the RE for the SCCA Buccaneer region in the late 70’s and 1980. I personally got into SCA and SOVREN in 1995 at the age of 16 working as a flat tow and corner worker. My father and I did that until 2000 when we started racing a 1969 Datsun 510 in SOVREN while also helping with flat tow.. After he passed away in 2001 I raced another year, and did flat tow and hot pits on and off for a couple more years. I took some time off and last year started racing in SOVREN again with my newly acquired 1969 Mini Cooper.

I have a great love for vintage race cars as well as the Vintage ideal of racing. Which is showcasing the amazing cars and racing with the utmost respect and safety. I believe that as vintage drivers we are responsible for each other and out cars and that only with respect and sometimes a bit of extra caution we can all race closely together with as few incidents as possible.

Thank you for your consideration.

Stephen Newby (Incumbent)

I have raced CASC, SCCA (Nat & Reg), Conference (ICSCC) and of course, SOVREN, over the past 40+ years. I served on the executive of the Sports Car Club of B.C. and was Competition Board Rep for SCCBC at Conference events for many years. I was also a Driving Instructor for the SCCBC school for 10+ years. I would like to continue to be a member of the Competition Committee and offer a balanced approach to enforcement and classification of cars. I would also like to help attract new drivers and cars to help fill our grids. I am more into inclusion than exclusion and I can always find a way to reconcile situations and eventualities.
