ACNW HPDE Run Group Assignments for Instructors
Audi Club NA - Northwest Chapter
Feb 28, 2017 - Mar 8, 2017

Hello Audi Club Northwest Instructors!

We had 92 responses for our ACNW HDPE Run Group Assignments survey. The results are in: 86% of respondents prefer the current pace-based run group assignment approach and 83% are satisfied with their typical run group assignment (but 12% would like to be in a higher run group). Based on these results, we'll continue with the same run group assignment procedure as we have in the past… but with one small change.

To ensure that our customers have the best experience possible - and this is important since we have a lot of competition these days - we want to ensure that we optimize the instructor/student pairing. Part of providing the best experience for the student driver is to make sure that there is a session gap between the student's run group and the instructor's run group. In other words, with a 4 run-group event running in order - White, Green, Red, Yellow - if a student is running in Red then we want their instructor to run in White, and if a student is running in Yellow, then we want their instructor to run in Green.

This arrangement is beneficial to both the student and instructor. With free time between the student's and coach's sessions, the coach can be buckled up in their student's car prior to the student's session to provide pre-session coaching and goal-setting. Immediately after the session the coach will have time to provide post-session feedback, help check the condition of their student's car, and go check out what's going on in their student's download session.

Similar benefits to you; no longer will you need to sprint to your car because your student just got off track in Yellow and you're running in the White run group, or cutting your Green session short because your student is up next in Red. You get time to check your tire pressures and fluids, and get a drink of water.

I'm sure you'll agree that this arrangement makes for a much more relaxing day for you, and more importantly, your student.

So, what does this mean for run group assignments? For the most part, not much will change. Most coaches will still be in the White run group because most students will be in Red. We typically have about a half dozen or less students in Yellow (last year we averaged between 4 and 5), so we'll need an equal number of instructors in Green. Note that our students in Yellow tend to be more experienced (except for the novices sharing a car with someone in Red) so we'd ideally like to pair them with more experienced coaches.

Going forward this is how it's going to work:

You'll tell us what run group you'd prefer to run in by answering the appropriate question in the survey below

We'll try to honor your preference as often as possible, but we will satisfy the requirements laid out above

In practice, I suspect that you may drive in your non-preferred run group at most 2-3 days (not events) per season and we'll balance this out amongst the instructors so we all share the load

If you are assigned to a different run group for an event day, please keep your eyes open and provide feedback on the drivers in your "new" run group. For example, "the driver of that silver S4 should be considered for White - she's quick and got great car control." For those of you who haven't run in Green in a while I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at how much overall pace they have now. One of the side benefits of our new approach is that we'll be able to promote more Green drivers to White, which is long overdue for some drivers.

Finally, a reminder that as an instructor you are permitted to run in any run group's session provided that a) it doesn't affect your student's experience and b) you drive appropriately for the pace of that run group. So, if you're assigned to Green but want to do a session in White late in the day, have at it.

As always, thank you for volunteering to be instructors with ACNW. We've built a fantastic HPDE program with a great culture (Ross Bentley says so) and it's primarily because you have the most impact on the way our students experience their day and subsequently form impressions of ACNW. Let's continue to strive to make that experience the best it can be.
