METAL WORKING AND HOTRODS, Saturday April 19, 2014

By David Sears

Ron Covell, Wizard of Metal Shaping, and Gary’s Rods and Restoration in Watsonville

Ron Covell, Creative Metalworking: Ron Covell is a living legend in world of metal shaping. Ron started his career at Los Gatos High School where he built a custom Model A coupe. Ron has accumulated top awards for his roadster creations at the Grand National Roadster Show, as well as a Masters Degree in Sculpture. Ron now spends his time giving specialty classes to metal working professionals, and producing instructional videos on different aspects of metalworking. We are very fortunate that Ron has agreed to show us his shop and some of the techniques he uses to create body panels and restoration parts for vintage cars, as well as completely new designs for custom projects.

Gary George, Gary’s Rods and Restoration: Although Gary’s shop has been open only 2 years they have produced multiple prize winners at concourse and hot rod events, including the local “Woodies at the Wharf” completion for their restoration of a rare 1956 Cadillac “Viewmaster” Woodie Wagon. Gary has some incredible projects in his large and well equipped shop, and will be able to guide us through the many stages of restoration, from custom metal work to achieving perfect finishes.

Barbecue with Ann Bornstein and Rich Persoff: We will finish the day with a barbecue hosted by long time MBCA members Ann Bornstein and Rich Persoff. Rich is well known in the botany world for developing the popular garden variety Mimulus (“Jellybean”) from the California native Mimulus (Sticky Monkey Flower). Ann Bornstein has been our membership chairman since the beginning of time. The barbecue will feature wine from local Watsonville vintner Pinto Lake Spirits.

At about 2:30 we will go to Gary’s Rods and Restoration, 546 Walker Street, Watsonville

Afterwards we will convene at Rich and Ann’s home at 61 Devon Court, on the shores of Pinto Lake, for a barbecue with local wines, to recount the day’s adventures.
