" A Day In Richmond, The Local Heart of The WWII Effort "

By  Geoff Paulson, President

Some of us might remember that 70 years ago Richmond was a thriving industrial city, building ships for the war effort. Workers were few therefore woman joined the war movement. Rosie the Riveter was and is the national symbol of that effort. We have organized a day to explore the rich history of the local war effort and those days in Richmond.

We will begin with a tour of the SS Red Oak Victory Ship. It was launched from Richmond in 1944 and served as an ammunition ship for various ships in the South Pacific  Saved from the scrap heap, the ship was moved from the Ready Reserve Fleet to Richmond in 1998. She was moved back to the dock in the port where she was built and is now a National museum. We will have docent led tours of the ship beginning at 10:00am. After the tours we will head over to a local restaurant "Assemble" for lunch. Lunch will be on your own and is located next door to the Rosie the Riveter Museum. They have a wonderful Sunday Brunch and we recommend reservations. Make them between Noon and 1:00pm.

After Lunch we will continue our tour next door with a visit to Rosie the Riveter Museum. Explore and honor the efforts and sacrifices of American civilians on the World War II home front.  Find out how they lived, worked and got along. Many faces, many stories, many truths weave a complex tapestry of myths and realities from this time of opportunity and loss. There are 2 short films of history which we will attend beginning after 2:00pm. Allow 2 hours for the exhibit and films. You will be allowed to explore the museum on your own.

Following the Museum we will head over to Point Richmond, across from Knox Miller Park to the Golden State Model Railraod Museum. This will be a self guided tour. The highly-detailed model train layouts represent prototypical scenery in Northern and Central California. They run both freight and passenger trains typical of the steam era through modern day diesels. The three main modeling scales are O scale (1:48), HO scale (1:87) and N scale (1:160). If you loved trains as a kid you will not be disappointed. Trains only run on Sunday until 5:00pm, so allow time to get there and for viewing. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for Seniors.

Price:  $20 per person, covers the cost of the Victory Ship Tour. Lunch and the Railroad Museum are on your own. Rosie the Riveter Museum is free.
