Driver's Education is designed to improve your driving skills and learn techniques at speed. Track experience is necessary for this event and skills learned will make you a better driver. The full track is 4.5 miles long, with 23 turns and is an absolute blast to drive. The Outer Loop adds a great high-speed turn, Witchcraft, runs 3.0 miles, and makes for some fast lap times! UMC is a terrific facility with lots of amenities like paved parking, gas pumps and real bathrooms. Food is available on-site, as are shaded areas for spectators.
You do not have to be a PCA member to participate and we expect a number of other car brands on the track. For this event, we require that you have prior track experience. However, we will have a limited number of instructors on Friday and Saturday. There are also safety requirements for you and your car. These include an M 2010 or Snell SA 2010 or newer rated helmet, and closed toe shoes. Shorts and short sleeved shirts will be acceptable for this event. NO convertibles without rollover protection. Boxsters and 996 and newer Porsche Cabriolets have Factory Roll Over protection, and will run with the top up. Earlier model Porsche Convertibles will need Roll Bars or Cages installed. All vehicles must run with the tops in place, no open top cars allowed. (This means T-tops, Convertible tops, Targa tops must be in place and up!) If you are running a convertible with roll-over protection, but aren't sure if it qualifies, please reach out to us before registration! Please indicate your level of experience on the registration form. There will be limited instructors available on Friday, but there will be no rookie or beginner run group.
Shared Cars – if you want to share a car with another DE driver please note that we will have two DE run groups on Friday & Saturday and only ONE on Sunday. This means that you will not be able to share your car on Sunday. If you have questions on how this will work please contact Greg Troester at de@irpca.org
Tech Inspection & Required Forms
Your car must have had a Full Tech inspection within the last 30 days prior to this event (annual tech forms are no longer accepted). We strongly recommend that you have this done prior to coming to the track! IRPCA will NOT offer full tech inspections at the track the morning of the event! There are several garages that may offer this service at the track- you will need to check with them and you will likely miss some track time. You can get your full car tech at many shops - check this list for some suggestions.
The Full Tech inspection forms are available here.
In addition to the above “Full” tech, PCA National requires us to do a "Top Tech" at the track. This is a very brief safety check and only takes a few minutes so please be on time or you will miss your 1st session. The Top Tech inspection forms are available at here. (please bring both forms with you to the track- it helps everything go more smoothly!)
Driver's Education Information
We look forward to having an extremely fun and safe event. We intend to follow PCA and Intermountain Region PCA guidelines during this event.
The Driver's Education portion of the weekend is based on a non-competitive format, focusing on developing foundational high performance driving skills and car control/awareness. We will not be collecting or reporting lap times in Driver's Education
Required equipment:
No passengers are allowed except for approved instructors (with identification) and their students.
Be safe on the track and in the pits. The Number One objective of novice drivers on a track should be to become aware of other traffic. Number two objective is to be aware of how your car responds to input.
There will be a “three spins and you're out” rule enforced for this event. If you have more than two spins during the day you will be asked to leave for the rest of the day. Following each spin anywhere on or off the track, you will receive a black flag telling you to come into the pits safely to have a chat with the IRPCA member running that group. Come in after each spin, even if you don't see a black flag - we saw your spin! He will ask you to analyze what happened. If you don't know, you'll be asked to exit the track at that point. If you realize what happened, explain what you could do differently and you’ll be allowed back on the track. Your car will also be given a quick look over for damage.
You will receive a list of the flags and their meaning when you register at the track.
Learn what the flags mean. Pay attention to the flag explanation in the drivers meeting. Also make sure you understand where passing is allowed. Passing at the wrong place or without a signal will result in expulsion.
Pass only on the straights and never in corners. Overtake another car only on their driver's side - no exceptions! This is to ensure visibility for the overtaken driver, as well as clear communication prior to right-hand corners! Do not pass without being signaled by the driver that you are going to pass. Slower drivers should indicate your knowledge of cars about to pass you by pointing them past. You will not make friends by holding people up who are faster than you are. Have fun and learn to drive well. If you're running into a long "train" or constantly accordion with another car - take a slow drive through the pits - you'll have a much more productive session than if you're frustrated behind other cars. Report your concerns to the DE Chair after the session - be part of the solution!
