General Instructions

Welcome to “The Blacke” 2016 Road Rallye.  This Rallye is an SCCA Divisional Road Rallye, as well as, part of the TCRC Winter Rallye Series.  Sunset is at 4:24pm, so the rallye will run mostly at night.  External night lighting will be helpful.  Interior lighting will be essential for reading the route instructions.  A GPS device will be helpful.  It will allow you to see intersections before you arrive, as well as, which way the roads go over crests.  In addition, we will be giving GPS pickup point information using latitude and longitude should you go astray or get late and want to pickup the rallye along the route.  Cell phone coverage is spotty to non-existent in much of the rallye area.

Winter

Conditions can be anywhere from no snow to a foot or more. Usually there is no snow and roads should be in good shape.  Temperature should be in the mid - 30’s.  I advise you to bring a blanket in case you have car trouble.

Tires

We recommend good winter tires, but it’s not a requirement.  I have run winter rallyes on good all-season tires without difficulty.

Details

Official Time:  This event will be timed using clocks reading in hundredths of a minute.  This is to simplify timing calculations and scoring.  Official Rallye Time will be available at Registration.  All clocks used at checkpoints will have been set to this clock.  It is extremely important you set your watch or clock with the Official Rallye Time.

Odometer Check:  The first portion of the rallye will consist of an odometer check.  This will allow you to compare the reading of your odometer to the Official Mileage (OM).  Calculating the error and applying it to the OM will allow you to adjust course following mileages to mileages that will show up on your stock odometer.

Odometer Correction Factor = Car Mileage/Official Mileage

After calculating your Correction Factor you would simply multiply all the OM’s by the FACTOR to correct them to what your odometer will display.

CAST: Commence, Continue or Change Average Speed To - This is the average speed used to calculate your progress for a leg.  Calculate the time between instructions using CAST multiplied by the interval distance.

            Time = (60 / CAST) x Distance

AN Odd number CAST indicate you are in an area where you may find a checkpoint.

AN Even number CAST indicate you are in a Free Zone.  No checkpoints will be encountered.  You will be required to calculate time, however.

Route Instructions:  The Route Instructions will be handed out at Registration.  Verify that all pages are in the packet and that everything is in order.  Check that mileages and Numbered Route Instructions (NRI’s) are sequential.

Column OneNRI: Numbered Route Instruction must be completed in sequence.

Column TwoOM: Official Mileage from the last Zero Odometer Point.  This is the mileage where the NRI action will be executed.

Column Three – IM: Increment Mileage from the last NRI.  Useful in determining distance to next NRI

Column Four – Tulip: A Tulip instruction is a graphic, describing the intersection or action point, at the OM, the action is to be performed.  You enter a tulip from the bottom represented by the circle or dot.  You leave the tulip by the arrowhead.

Column FiveReference:  The reference indicates the road or a sign at the tulip.  If the word is in quotation marks it will be found on a sign. Otherwise it merely indicates a road at the intersection that may or may not be marked.

Column Six - Timing:  This column gives you all the information you need for staying on time.  Start times, TODRs, CASTs, and Breaks. At some action points an ET may be given.

Timing, Scoring and Penalties

Scorecards

You will be provided with scorecards.  Please use them to verify your scores with official results. Errors do occur and we want to correct them before the awards presentation.

Scoring

Scoring will be based on your arrival time at the checkpoints.  Penalties will be assessed as follows:

·         1 point for each hundredth of a minute early or late at a Checkpoint.

·         25 points for stopping within sight of a Checkpoint. (Control Workers discretion.)

·         200 points (2 minutes) maximum score at any Checkpoint.

Measurement & Calculation

Course was measured using a 2007 Subaru WRX, equipped with a Timewise 798A. Input came from magnetic sensors attached to the driver side front drive shaft.  Tires were Pirelli 215/45R17 P Zero All Season Plus, inflated to 38 PSI.  Mileages where measured to the .001 mile and truncated to .01 miles.  Times will be given to one hundredths (.01) of a minute.  Where a stop or yield sign is present, the mileage is at the sign.  If no sign is present, the apex (center) of the corner is used.

Conditions on the day of measurement were in the mid to upper 30s and overcast.

Controls

Will be identified by standard SCCA checkpoint signs.  An example will be at Registration.  Out markers will be used and indicated on Control Slips.

Control Zones

The object of the rallye is to arrive at the checkpoints exactly on time.

The Timing Line will be identified by a checkpoint sign on the right side of the road.  You will be timed when your front tires pass the sign. We will be using a timing hose to time vehicles as they cross the timing line. DO NOT STOP at the sign.  Control workers will be about 200 feet down the road and you should stop next to them to get your timing slip.  You then need to clear the area for the next car to enter.  The slip will show your In Time, give you an Out Time, show the new CAST and describe the Out Marker.  Official Mileage and Time of the leg will also be shown. Start the next leg at the Out Marker at the new CAST.

Time Allowances

Timing allowances are a “Pause” to correct a delay. They must be in increments as indicated on the TA Slip.  If you find that you are behind schedule, calculate how late you are and circle the appropriate time on a Time Allowance slip. Hand in the allowance at the checkpoint.  No Form, No Delay, No Exceptions!  If you are more than 19.5 minutes late the checkpoint crews will be gone.  Just keep following the instructions and enjoy the drive.  Please consider using the GPS Coordinates to pick up the rallye.

Following the Course

The route instructions are easy to follow Tulips.  A Tulip is a simplified drawing of the intersection at the NRI. A bird’s eye view.  You enter from the bottom of the diagram and leave following the arrow.  Instructions are to be completed in numerical order.  Each instruction will contain official mileage and a Tulip description of what action to take at the mileage.  You will get your routes when you register.  If you have any questions, ask them before or during the Contestant’s Meeting.

The correct course at each intersection is determined by applying the following priority list in the order shown:

1.    Proceed as directed by the Tulip at the OM (Official Mileage).

2.    Follow the “Principal Road”.

Roads

Roads marked “DEAD END” or “NO OUTLET” or obvious driveways (usually have a Fire Number) do not exist.  They may show up as a dashed line on a Tulip.  Unpaved roads do exist and will be used on this event.

Signs

Signs maybe referenced in a Tulip, as a dash or dot.  If words are in “” they are on signs used for the NRI at the NRI mileage.  If not in “” they are reference only and may not be found at the NRI.

Glossary

CAST x – Commence/Continue/Change Average Speed To x mph.

Control Zone – A portion of the rallye you will find a control.  You will be timed at the control and receive a Control Slip.

ET – Elapsed Time is the calculated time to the NRI from the last Out Marker.

Free Zone – A portion of the rallye where no controls or checkpoints will be encountered.  You will be on the clock and need to calculate time through the Free Zone.

Principal Roads – The obvious continuation of the road you are traveling on.  Determined by surface type, curve arrow signs or pavement centerline.

Stop – An Official Stop Sign you are obligated to stop at.

TODR – Time of Day Restart. Restart the rallye at this time plus your car number.

Miscellaneous

The most important thing on a rallye is to DRIVE SAFELY and stay on course.  If you go more than the Incremental Mileage without encountering a NRI you are off course.  Return to the last action point and attempt to get back on course.

Getting good scores should be easy - if you leave the Out Marker at the proper time.

There will be a couple of breaks along the way.  Gas and restrooms are available.  You should have around 15 to 30 minutes.  The Rallye Master Phone Number is 414/378-6404.  If you get lost or drop out – call or text.

Things to Remember:

      -          Have Fun / Be Safe   - Be Courteous – We may want to Use These Roads Again

-          Don’t Overdrive your Headlights - Watch for Wildlife and the Amish

-          If you get Late, use a Timing Allowance

-          The County Sheriff and Melrose Police have been informed of our activities. A ticket will result in a DNF.
