HIGH PERFORMANCE DRIVING SCHOOL
Buttonwillow Raceway Park

Friday, November 16, 2018 - Sunday, November 18, 2018

EVENT DESCRIPTION

This is not a race or even a racing school, but rather an event where the primary focus is SAFETY, FUN, and LEARNING. You will improve your own personal performance behind the wheel.

You will be learning and practicing the art and principles of precision driving in a fun, relaxed, and organized school setting. The event is conducted at a race track under close supervision by experienced and trained Audi Club instructors. You will learn techniques for handling and controlling your own vehicle. This training is designed so you may safely explore your capabilities as a driver and those of your vehicle. It will help prepare you for emergencies that may occur in normal driving situations.

At no time will you be pushed or encouraged to go any faster than is comfortable for you. All participants will be provided with instruction and organized into run groups according to prior experience, demonstrated skill, and type of vehicle. This is for your safety and will enhance your learning by providing an opportunity to share the day's experience with your peers.

Have you been to Buttonwillow with us before? Here are Some Highlights!

  • NEW! Personal Video Coaching – Dion von Moltke of Racers360.com is a former Audi Sport team driver. Dion will be available for optional one-on-one personal video coaching throughout the event.
  • The Tent for all social activities! - If you've joined us at Buttonwillow the last couple of years you know the club’s big-top tent at the track is a big hit. It will be the location for ALL non-driving activities, including Friday night’s check-in and mandatory meetings.
  • Convertibles - Audi Club North America allows many models of convertible cars at our driving schools. See the Details below.
  • SUV/CUV- Audi Club North America now allows a few models of small SUV/CUV cars at our driving school (i.e., Q3, Q5, SQ5). There are a few restrictions, so see the Details below.
  • No designated Host hotel – Since all activities will be held at the track, there is NO designated host hotel. You may choose freely from various area lodging alternatives, many of which will offer an Audi Club rate. For maximum convenience you may also stay in your RV at the track.
  • Friday Experienced Drivers Day - Our Friday Experienced Driver Days are very popular. We will run course #1 (Star Mazda) CCW. This is the weekend’s course, but in the reverse direction! There is no formal instruction on Friday, so Friday is limited to our experienced drivers -- beginners and novices may observe and get a ride-along with an instructor on Friday, then will join us for driving on Saturday and Sunday.

Venue

Track Buttonwillow Raceway Park is a safe and fun road course located at 24551 Lerdo Hwy, Buttonwillow, CA 93206, (661) 764-5333.

Banquet ALL activities will be held at the track, including the Saturday evening banquet. Saturday evening's Raffle and Auction will feature many cool items from our sponsors, including Audi Collection USA swag, Audi Club Golden Gate event certificates, 034 Motorsports performance products, Hooked on Driving event certificates, Mothers car care products, Motive brake bleeding tools, Protective Film Solutions clear-bra care products, and more.

Hotels There is not a designated headquarters hotel for this event. You may choose from many area lodging options, including:

Camping: Because all evening events are held in the Audi Club big-top tent at the track, RV camping at the track is a very convenient option. RV spaces with hookups may be rented by calling the track administration office at (661) 764-5333; or, “dry” camping in the paddock may be had without charge and no reservation is needed. There are many RV rental sources in the LA area if you would like to explore this option. You might even consider renting a trailer and towing your car to the track behind your motor home! Audi Club SoCal has arranged for a 24-hour gate guard from 7:00 AM on Friday until 6:00 PM on Sunday.

If you would like to stay in a motel near the track there are basic two-star highway motels located twelve miles from the track, on Tracy Avenue at the Buttonwillow exit from I-5. In general order of desirability they are:

  • Vagabond Inn / Studio 6 Buttonwillow -  (661) 764-5153 Renamed, was the Motel 6 (North) and we are told the Studio 6 rooms have been recently renovated. Pro Tip: Ask for a room in Studio 6 (away from the freeway, and tell them you want the Buttonwillow racer's rate.
  • Motel 6 Central - (661) 764-5121 (Last year's local recommendation, there is an Audi Club rate available).
  • Buttonwillow Inn, was the Super 8 Motel - (661) 764-5117
  • Rodeway Inn I-5 at Hwy 58 - (661) 764-5207

If you are looking for something nicer, the Best Western Plus Wasco Inn & Suites is located at 1704 Hwy 46 in the town of Wasco, The Best Western is about 21 miles from the track (an approximately 25-minute drive). We've headquartered at this very pleasant three-star hotel in prior years. Call the hotel directly at (661) 758-1111 to make a reservation and mention you are with the Audi Club. We anticipate there will be an Audi Club rate available.

While there are other similarly-nice chain hotels located in Delano and in North Bakersfield, they are about twice as far from the track as Wasco.

Driving School

"He who loves practice without theory is like the sailor who boards ship without a rudder and compass and never knows where he may cast." — Leonardo da Vinci

An Audi Club SoCal driving school is much more than just a track day. We provide you with a balanced learning environment utilizing modern eLearning, classroom, and on-track instruction.

Classroom Sessions
This is a high-performance driver safety education school - it is not practice for any racing or speed contest. All participants will attend classroom sessions designed to teach vehicle dynamics and driving techniques. Classroom and driving time will be balanced to give drivers a better understanding of the principals and application of precision driving.

Car Control Exercises
Car control exercises are provided on Saturday morning for our beginning drivers, so you can practice the principles you've learned online and in the classroom in a safe environment before driving on the track with your personal instructor later in the day.

Skid Pad
Due to low interest and staffing issues, we will not be renting the skid pad this year.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Friday Experienced Driver Day NEW! We will be lapping the full course on Friday! Open to all Audi Club instructors, and our student drivers who have previously been approved to drive solo at an Audi Club driving school. If you believe your experience at other clubs might qualify you, please see the Experienced Driver section, below. No-host lunch is available on Friday at the Tower Cafe.

Passing Protocol Audi Club North America requires passing permission be granted by use of turn signals on the car being passed. Passing will only occur in designated passing zones. There will be a minimum of four designated passing Zones for all Run Groups.
Passing in all run groups will be on either side. The car being passed is expected to drive their normal line, therefore the passing car should plan on driving off-line to complete the pass. Off-Line is usually the side of the track that is the direction of the next corner.
Passing zones will be designated with a green cone at the start of the passing zone and a yellow cone at the end of the passing zone. All passes must be complete before the end of the passing zone (the start of the braking zone). Late passing into the corners ("dive bombing") will not be tolerated.

First-Timer? If this is your first time at an Audi Club driving school, please read our First-Timers Introduction and Preparation article.

To rent a garage please call the track at (661) 764-5333. The cost is $200 per two-car garage for the entire weekend.
