Turkeys in the Trunk 2016

Checkered Flag Porsche

About this event

The World Series is over and it’s time for us to get back to reality. The air is finally chilly, we’re raking leaves and there are Christmas Trees on display in Home Depot. It must be time for

Turkeys in the Trunk!!!

Please join us for a Saturday of fun and camaraderie at our 7th annual Turkeys in the Trunk charity event on Saturday, 19 November 2016.

This event supports the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore in their effort to collect food for the Thanksgiving season at their Mayflower Marathon food drive, a weekend long effort to fill as many big rigs as possible with donated food for distribution to less fortunate local families.

For those of you who haven’t been to “Turkeys in the Trunk”, this is how it works:  First, you load your front trunk, your back trunk, and the passenger foot well with frozen turkeys, canned vegetables, yams, and the rest of the fixings for a Thanksgiving meal.  Don’t forgot to leave room for your spouse but tell them to pack lightly!

Second, proceed to Checkered Flag Porsche on Virginia Beach Blvd for the start of the day. Pull into the Service Bays and our FSR crew will unload your donations to be weighed, then reload them back into your car.  Whoever brings the most food, by weight, will win a Porsche logo prize donated by the dealership.  The weigh-in will be from 1:00 to 1:45PM.

After the weigh-in, we’ll drive to Pembroke Mall, about 4 miles west along Virginia Beach Blvd, to offload our food donations at the Mayflower Marathon.  The volunteers at the Marathon will be waiting for us with anticipation to offload the food.  Arrival of the First Settlers is one of the highlights of the entire weekend food drive!

Next, the party will continue at Pam and George Michaels' place in Virginia Beach.  We'll enjoy a delicious barbecue meal courtesy of First Settlers Region as thanks for your generous donations.

Last year we donated 7,244 pounds of food and $8,778.  That monetary donation allowed the Food Bank to buy $52,668 worth of food?! It sure would be great if we could donate even more this year!

The best parts of “Turkeys in the Trunk” are giving back to the community, driving our nice cars and finishing the day at the beautiful home of one of our members to enjoy beer, wine, some great food and some great friends!  Hope to see you there!

So hit the “Continue” button and sign up for a day of fun and charity!

For our northern and western area members, we invite you to make the drive south and join us.  Oceanfront rooms are cheap in November, so make a weekend of it!

Please note:  The goal of the Foodbank's Mayflower Marathon is to collect frozen turkeys, non-perishable food items and monetary donations.  Ideally, the food donated at the event can be turned into a fairly typical Thanksgiving meal for a person or family in need. The donated food is packed in boxes at the event by volunteers for distribution at the Foodbank beginning on Monday, November 21st.  So, please consider this when you decide what to donate.  Cash donations are also accepted at this event and you should make your check out directly to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia.  These are also presented at the Mayflower Marathon and reflected in FSR's total charity proceeds.

In the interest of fairness, the heavyweight competition will include some guidelines.  First of all, while other vehicles are welcomed, the food has to be loaded into a Porsche to compete.  We will have 2-door and 4-door categories for the heavyweight competition.  Also, the ‘judges’ will be looking for loose interpretations of the Marathon’s intent of collecting food for holiday meals - turkeys and the fixins’ are the goal; not low-volume/high weight bags of flour or cases of soda.
