June 6 to 8, 2008 Driver's School

The St. Louis chapter's driver’s schools are a great place to see just what you and your Bimmer can handle. Held at Gateway International Raceway every year since the late 80's, this event provides an opportunity to learn the ways of performance driving from well trained instructors under the safest of conditions. Once you understand how your car reacts to well defined stress levels incurred during track driving, you will be much better prepared for those highway and traffic emergencies. This is a great investment for any driver.

Our schools provide the following benefits:

  • Pre-Event Technical Inspection at a local BMW Shop free to registrants at the scheduled date (Thursday May 22, 2008),
  • Technical classroom instruction, including printed materials from the curriculum content,
  • Separated skill level grouping to foster more effective learning,
  • A major portion of behind-the-wheel experience,
  • Electronic communication (radio) with an in-car instructor,
  • Instructors assigned to a minimum number of students to provide maximum personal attention,
  • Attendance gift (shirt, folding chair, gear bag, etc. - also available for purchase),
  • Refreshments available during the event,
  • Camaraderie with other enthusiasts and club members from around the country,

Please be aware, this event is serious business requiring the practical considerations of driving your car at speed and the accompanying risks. The event is not a race nor is any racing allowed. Timing or other competition equipment is strictly prohibited. These events provide a controlled environment where you can safely approach the envelope your vehicle's performance capabilities.

ALL PARTICIPANTS ARE REQUIRED TO BE CURRENT MEMBERS OF THE BMW CCA, 18 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER, LICENSED IN ANY U.S. STATE, AND SIGN WAIVERS FO LIABILITY.   No one is allowed onto the track during a school session without an approved Snell 2000 or later helmet. All vehicles must pass a Tech Inspection as dictated by our event policies. Not only do our schools always conform to the safety requirements of Gateway International Raceway, but the minimum standards of the operations of BMW CCA as well. Every provision for your safety and well being are mandated by our procedures and processes, including full time attendance of certified emergency personnel and support.

We believe a safe school is an enjoyable one for everyone and take all reasonable action to assure your safety, but can not eliminate all risks.  Insurance coverage typically applies to any on track event since this is not a competitive event.  Liability coverage, however, does vary widely among providers and we recommend checking with your own insurance company or agent for details of your specific coverage and liability.

June 6 to 7, 2008 Club Racing School

If you have been considering participating in the BMW CCA's Club Racing program, then a Club Racing School is a mandatory requirement for a competition license.  More information on the requirements for competing in Club  Racing are available on the BMW CCA Club Racing web site:  bmwccaclubracing.com/default.aspx

The  program will involve a variety of exercises to promote side by side driving ability, simulated race starts, passing and other elements of race craft.  Participants will participate in the Club Racing School on Friday and Saturday.  Club Racing School participants will be assigned their own run group on Saturday.  They will also be able to run under Driving School rules on Sunday in an advanced or instructor group.

THE INFORMATION ON THIS PAGE HAS BEEN UPDATED

PLEASE READ IT CAREFULLY NO MATTER YOUR LEVEL OF EXPERIENCE!

These requirements may significantly affect your ability to participate in our event.    Reading and complying with these requirements will avoid future issues or disappointment if we are forced to decline your application.

A Snell 2000 or newer certified helmet is required; a limited number of loaners are available

All drivers must be licensed drivers 18 years of age or older.  All participants must be current members of the BMW Car Club of America.  Online and paper membership application forms are available at:  stage.bmwcca.org/index.php

CONVERTIBLES

Convertibles must have an approved aftermarket roll bar installed.  The roll bar must be high enough that the driver's helmet clears a line between the top of the roll bar and the top of the windshield by one inch or more.  Factory roll hoops or bars typically don't meet this requirement.  Self deploying roll hoops are not considered to meet this requirement. Properly installed 4, 5 or 6 point harnesses are also required.   (See 4,5, and 6 POINT BELTS below for more information.) The convertible top must be in place.

Please be aware that most instructors will not instruct in a convertible.  If you have a convertible complying with our requirements, we will make all reasonable effort to identify an instructor willing to ride in a convertible, but can not guarantee that we will be successful.

4,  5  and 6 POINT BELTS

All aftermarket or racing belts must be installed according to the manufacturer’s instruction.  Please note:  shoulder belts must pass through, not around any seat headrest and anti-submarine straps must be routed through a center hole in the seat designed for that purpose.  Shoulder belts must pass through the seat’s head restraint for the harnesses to be effective.  Seats with integral head rests must have holes designed for shoulder belt routing.  The use of a sternum strap will not help meet this requirement.  A roll bar or cage is not required, but it is highly recommended.

No SUV's, trucks or motorcycles are allowed.
