Why do we do this?

We make a difference when we help teens participate in our Street Survival events.

Teens have an 89.2% chance of being involved in a crash during the first three years of driving according to streetsurvival.org.
After completing a Street Survival course, 75% of our students are accident free after 5 years, with 20% involved in accidents that are not their fault.

Event requirements

Saturday September 15th- a training day for everyone:

We are holding a staff training day on Saturday Sept 15th for both In-Car Coaches and Volunteer staff.

The training day starts with a classroom session first so that everyone can experience what the students will be seeing during their classroom sessions.  The objectives for each of the 3 different parking lot exercises will also be explained.

The 3 parking lot exercises that the students go through are:

  1. A round skid pad (under steer - over steer)
  2. Various braking exercises (using the ABS, threshold braking)
  3. A serpentine course defined by traffic cones (fast hands, look where you want to go)

After the classroom session, the entire course will be setup and an

experienced In-Car coach will ride with each "new" In-Car coach to demonstrate each exercise's objectives and provide discussions about how to work with the students.  In-Car coaching focuses on "look where you want to go" and helping the student "feel" what the car is doing.  This is "on the job training" and is a great way to become comfortable as a new coach.

Current Coaches:

We are looking for current coaches to volunteer on Saturday and help train our new coaches by riding with the new coaches through each exercise.  If you are a current coach, please consider helping on Saturday even if that is the only day you are available.  If you are coming from out of town, please join us after our classroom review around 11:30 am.

What do I need to be a new In-car Coach?

You should have at least 2 year of Autocross, High Performance driving event, or racing experience. In addition, coaches need to feel comfortable working with novice teen drivers.  This means you should be capable of interacting with teens and helping them get the most out of their experience.  In-car coaches must also complete the Tire Rack Street Survival online training course.

Here's the link to the most current course:     http://streetsurvival.org/schools/become-a-coach

If you've already completed the training in prior years, you do not need to do it again.
Only those who have not completed the training course or are first time In-Car Coaches need to take this training course.

NOTE:  You can take the course repetitively, as many times as you need in order to become familiar with the course content.  You can take notes so that you can understand the course objectives.

Volunteer Staff – a fun way to help with the event

Anyone who has an interest in helping with the variety of tasks we need to accomplish throughout the day is welcome to sign up as a volunteer.  Examples: Help set up traffic cones used in the driving exercises, assist with registration, set up for lunch, make sure we stay on schedule throughout the day, etc.

General Information about our students:

Students must be ages 16 to 21, to register for the Street Survival event on Sunday Sept 16, 2018. Cost is $95.00
Students should have held a learner's permit for at least 6 months, or be licensed to drive.

The emphasis for the day is for instructors to teach advanced car control techniques they can use in every day driving - and to have an excellent set of volunteers to make this event successful.  It's a fun day for everyone - students, parents, and coaches/volunteers!

If you've been with us before, you know what a rewarding day it is to work with new teen drivers and help them learn new skills to become better drivers.

If you've never done this before - what are you waiting for?  Not ready to be an In-Car Coach? Not sure what this is all about? That's OK!! C'mon out and volunteer to help us run the event.  There's always plenty to do!
