Oktoberfest 2016 Instructor Sign-up

Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

About this event

Celebrate BMW!  Oktoberfest 2016 in Monterey will include four HPDE days at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.  We have the track from Thursday, August 25, through Sunday, August 28.  We will be sharing the paddock area with BMW NA, BMW AG, club racing, other O'fest activities, sponsors and vendors.  Not all these events happen every day, but there will always be something going on for you to enjoy during your downtime.  You do not have to sign up for O'fest in order to instruct, but you will probably regret it if you don't.

Event Chief Instructors are the Pacific Region DEC rep, Steve Stepanian, and Golden Gate Chapter Co-Chiefs, Peter Vinsel and Billy Maher.  Other Chief Instructors from the Pacific Region will be helping out on the days they are available.

Every chapter must follow the Driving School Minimum Standards in the National BMW CCA Operations Manual.  Safety is always the first priority, followed by learning and fun. Since this is a National event, rather than an individual chapter or even a regional event, we will do our best to integrate practices from other regions.  However if a conflict arises, the practices the Pacific Region is comfortable with will take precedence,

The first session of each morning will be a track familiarization session.  This is a low speed, no helmet, no passing session where Laguna Seca experienced instructors be in the left seat with the non-experienced LS instructors in the passenger seat. This will give those who have never seen the track a chance to see what the track offers and hear about it's subtleties while not having to concentrate on where you are going.  Additionally, there will be two sessions each day designated for instructors.  Laguna Seca only allows 35 cars on track at a time, and we will have 70+ instructors a day, so you will be assigned either the morning or afternoon instructor session.   These instructor sessions are intended for your enjoyment.  You may take passengers but you don't have to.  Regular HPDE passing rules will apply.

The registration form has a lot of questions designed to help us figure out how best to utilize each instructor.  Please be sure to provide the name and contact info for your usual Chief Instructor(s) in case we need to contact him/her to help determine the ideal position for you at the event.

The sound restriction at Laguna Seca for this HPDE is 105 db.

Event requirements

Tech Forms: To make it easier on the staff to collect and check paperwork, we would prefer you use the Pre-Event Technical Inspection and Medical forms available here and on the O'fest website.  However, any chapter's tech form can be used as long as it conforms to the aforementioned Minimum Standards.  Remember that only a qualified individual can tech your vehicle.

Instructor Shirts:  All instructors will be provided with 1 free instructor shirt.  We are working on making additional shirts available for a reasonable price, but if you plan to instruct several days and don't want to have to rinse out your shirt each night, you may wear any other yellow instructor shirt .  Pacific Region instructors wear khaki pants or shorts with their yellow shirts.  It would be great if you can do the same, but if you don't have khakis, other pants/jeans are acceptable.  As always, only close-toed shoes are allowed.

Parking: Paddock space will be in limited so trailers, tow vehicles, toy boxes, etc., cannot be parked in the paddock.  Perimeter parking will be available for those items.  Instructor vehicle parking will be designated at the venue.

Lodging:  If you are signing up for O'fest and staying in the BMW CCA reserved blocks, approximately 50% of your room rate will be refunded to you on each day you instruct.  If you stay at another hotel/motel, that same amount will be provided to you to cover your room. (You make and pay for your own reservation then submit a reimbursement request with your invoice.)

Helmets:   Snell rated SA or M 2005, 2010 or 2015.  Helmets can be closed or opened faced.

Waivers:  We'll have them, you'll sign them.  Then you'll put on your wristband and wear it all week.

Car Numbers:   You will be issued numbers for your car.  If you have numbers already on the car, please cover them if possible.

Early registration packet pick-up:    You will be able to pick up your packet and sign waivers at the Hyatt Regency Monterey on Tuesday, August 23 between noon and 7 PM, or on Wednesday, August 24 from 8 AM to noon.

On-site registration packet pick-up:  In the paddock from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

Drivers Licenses/Insurance:    You must have a valid driving license, issued from whatever state your primary residence is located in.  Your personal insurance may or may not be in effect, consider getting track insurance.

Motorcycles:  They are obviously not allowed on track during the HPDE.  However, both BMW MOA and BMW RA are participating in O'fest and they are running Parade Laps on Friday afternoon.  If you belong to either of those clubs, this may be your chance to experience Laguna Seca on two wheels.
