GVC Mountain Top HPDE

New York Safety Track (NYST)

About this event

GVC BMW CCA Mountain Top HPDE at the New York Safety Track

GVC HPDE #106

Tired of riding out the pandemic in the concrete jungle? Come join us in the beautiful Catskill Mountains for our first ever HPDE at the New York Safety Track! Due to limitations resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic we unfortunately can not have in-car instruction at this event. We will make available a limited number of instructed spots that will utilize lead-follow instruction methods honed at the national BMW CCA level. These slots will be open to all students. The remaining slots will be filled by open lapping sessions available to all Advanced/Solo HPDE drivers. All standard BMW safety protocols and passing rules will be in effect.

Student run group will alternate between four track sessions and four class room sessions per day, as well as a quick debrief with your instructor after each run. The track is very technical so you'll have plenty to keep your mind busy for two days. Lapping run groups will get 4 on track sessions per day, amounting to almost 2 hours of open lapping per day.

Registration is limited to 15 students and 45 open lappers to prevent overcrowding. Early registration is highly encouraged!

To be confirmed for the Open Lapping group, drivers must satisfy one or more of the following criteria:

  • BMW CCA: Group S (or equivalent); Group 2 (advanced) and upper-level Group 3 (intermediate) drivers previously signed off to solo; SLIP rating L3 or higher.

  • PCA: white or black run group.

  • MSF-certified Level 1 or 2 instructors in good standing.

  • Professional or amateur (club) racers with valid competition licenses.

Please be sure your motorsportreg logbook is up to date.

To qualify for the Instructed session, drivers must satisfy one or more of the following criteria:

  • BMW CCA: Group 3 (intermediate) drivers not previously signed off to solo; SLIP rating L2 or higher.
  • Registration is now open to everyone!

If you are unsure whether you qualify for the lapping group, please contact  Bill O'Neill or Jay Sofianek (GVC Chief Instructors).

Guests are limited to two per driver. All guests must sign the GVC waiver immediately upon arrival.

Registration options and fees:

Two-day event:  $450

Since this is our first event at the NYST and everyone is going to take some time to get up to speed we don't feel it's fair to have first timers on track on Tuesday with people who have a full day of warm-up under their belts. Due to this we've decided to make all registrations for this event both Monday and Tuesday. Come enjoy the beautiful region and stay a while!

Additional Information:

Registration Restriction:

Due to very limited number of spots available registrations will only be available to GVC BMW CCA members until September 8th. We're sorry for this inconvenience, but there should be plenty of room if you get your registration in early.

New York state Covid-19 requirements:
In compliance with requirements from New York State, masking and social distancing will be required at all times while at the racetrack. Participants will be required to provide their own masks. More detailed precautions will be sent as we get closer to the event.
In addition, be sure and stay current with NY Covid Quarantine requirements, as a 14 day quarantine will be required if traveling from states with high rates of Covid infection.

Event requirements

This is a Genesee Valley Chapter BMW CCA event.

Vehicle and driver requirements must comply with BMW CCA and GVC minimum standards detailed on the GVC website:    http://gvc-bmwcca.org/Event_Requirements_DrivingSchool

All track vehicles are required to undergo a technical inspection within the month prior to the event.  If the vehicle is used for any other track event(s) between this inspection and our event, it must be re-inspected.  Inspections must be performed by a qualified individual or shop using the GVC pre-event tech form, which must be signed by the participant and submitted at event check-in.  Drivers are solely responsible for the safe condition of their vehicles, and for any damages to track property during the event.

GVC Tech form:  GVC Tech Form 2019-01.pdf

GVC Emergency Medical Forms also must be completed and brought to check-in at the event along with the signed Pre-event Tech form:

IMPORTANT:  GVC’s policy* for cars equipped with automatic “crash avoidance systems” (CAS).

Systems may go by different names depending on manufacturer, but they all have the same basic function.  The two systems of most concerned are:  1) Rear collision warning/automatic braking systems designed to prevent rear-end collisions at highway speeds; and 2) Active lane keeping assistants, which generate audible and tactile warnings, and in some cases, actively apply counter-steer, to prevent an unsafe lane change when the driver takes no action.  When operational, these systems are widely considered to be unsafe in conditions typically encountered on a racetrack at HPDE events.

Therefore, cars equipped with either or both these systems will be allowed on track ONLY if the systems are completely shut down and remain down until the ignition is turned off .  Vehicles in which such systems are “hardwired”, and therefore cannot be manually turned off, are not permitted on track at our driving schools.

If these shut-down procedures are followed to the letter, we have been assured that CAS-equipped cars will be safe and compatible with the HPDE track environment.

*Please note that the policy outlined herein applies only to Genesee Valley Chapter driving events, and does not necessarily represent national policy of the BMW Car Club of America or it’s affiliated chapters.

† We have been assured by BMWNA that these systems can be completely shut off by the driver on all current BMW models.
