GVC Advanced HPDE at the Glen - CANCELLED

Watkins Glen International

About this event

GVC Advanced HPDE at the Glen

CANCELED

WE ARE VERY SORRY TO ANNOUNCE CANCELLATION OF THIS EVENT DUE TO LOSS OF ACCESS TO THE GARAGE AND GARAGE PADDOCK AT THE GLEN.

Registration fees will be refunded in full to all participants.

This event is open only to advanced drivers and instructors, and is limited to only 75 cars to minimize congestion.  It's a great opportunity for skilled drivers to advance their high performance driving skills. The format is "open-track", but with a twist.  Drivers will be asked to select one of two run groups, faster and slower, according to pace and comfort level.  The two run groups will alternate half-hour track sessions, with the "faster" run group running on the half-hour, and the "slower" group at the top of the hour.  On day 1 (Wednesday), the two groups will remain separate for the first two sessions each (8:30 - 10:30 AM) to give drivers a chance to evaluate their choice of run group.  For the remainder of day 1 and all of day 2, the run groups will continue to alternate every half-hour, but drivers are free to run with either or both groups any time the track is "green". The only proviso is that drivers respect the "culture" of the group by driving in a manner consistent with the group's pace.  Feedback about this format has been overwhelmingly positive, with participants enjoying lots of track time, and expressing little or no complaints about overly aggressive driving, untimely point-byes, or traffic congestion.

All standard BMW CCA safety protocols and passing rules will be in effect.

Due to the nature of this event, and in the interests of keeping traffic reasonable, the number of drivers accepted is limited. To be confirmed for this event, you must satisfy all the following criteria:

  • You must be a member of BMW CCA.  Priority for filling slots off waitlist will be given to Genesee Valley Chapter members.

  • You must be an experienced advanced or expert level driver that has previously driven solo.  Examples include:

    • Club and professional racers with valid competition licenses.

Please be sure the driving history in your motorsportreg logbook is up to date.

Instruction:  Instructors are not assigned to drivers at this event.  Instructors with extensive experience driving the Glen will be available for consultation and in-car coaching on an individual basis.  However, participants that are clearly not qualified to participate in an event of this type will not be permitted to continue driving.

Guests are welcome to attend and enjoy the sights and sounds of WGI.  If your guests will be arriving separately, you must be sure to add them to our guest list so they may gain admittance to the track .  All guests must check-in immediately after arrival at the GVC Driver's Resource Center (Kendall Garage Bay 1) to sign the GVC waiver .

IMPORTANT:  GVC’s policy* for cars equipped with automatic “crash avoidance systems” (CAS).

CAS technologies go by different names depending on manufacturer, but they all have the same basic function.  The two systems of concern are:  1) Rear collision warning/automatic braking systems designed to prevent rear-end collisions at highway speeds; and 2) Active lane-keeping assistants, which generate audible and tactile warnings, and in some cases apply counter-steer, to prevent an unsafe lane change in traffic when the driver takes no action. When operational, these systems may be unsafe in conditions typically encountered on a racetrack at HPDE events.

Therefore, cars equipped with either or both these systems will be allowed on track ONLY if the systems are completely shut down and remain off until the ignition is turned off .  We have been assured by BMWNA that these systems can be completely shut off by the driver on all current BMW models.  Cars from other manufacturers will only be allowed if the driver can demonstrate that the system may be manually shut down.  Vehicles in which such systems are “hardwired”, and therefore CANNOT be manually turned off by the driver, are not permitted on track at GVC driving schools.

It is the responsibility of the participant to follow the vehicle's shut-down procedures to the letter before leaving staging and entering a "hot" track.  If these procedures are followed, we have been assured that CAS-equipped cars will be safe and compatible with the HPDE track environment.

*Please note that the policy outlined herein applies only to Genesee Valley Chapter driving events, and does not necessarily represent the national policy of the BMW Car Club of America or it’s affiliated chapters.
