FSR Mid-Summer Time, Speed, Distance Rally and BBQ

Yorktown, VA

About this event

Join your FSR friends on Saturday, 19 July 2014 for some friendly competition with a Time, Speed, and Distance Rally through the roads of Gloucester, Matthews, and Middlesex counties designed by rallymasters Tom and Eleanor Bobbitt.  The rally will end up at the beautiful riverfront home of FSR members Robyn and Gary Tyer in Waterview, VA for lunch (just north of Urbanna).

The drivers/navigators meeting will begin promptly at 9:45 AM at the Newport News Golf Club at Deer Run.  The first car will head out at 10:20 AM.  The golf course is located at 901 Clubhouse Way, Newport News, VA just off I-64 at exit #250B (Ft. Eustis Blvd.)  There are restroom facilities, coffee, doughnuts etc. available in the main clubhouse of the golfcourse.

.

Price per person for the lunch is $25, which includes beer and wine, and $10 for kids.  If you'd like to participate in the rally, but not the BBQ, there's no charge, but we ask that you register so that we have a head count for the rally.  Conversely, if you'd like to skip the rally but join us for lunch, you can meet us at the Tyer's at ~1:00PM.  We'll send address information to everyone via email the week of the event.

Note: please bring a folding chair or picnic blanket to sit on as you enjoy the views of the river!!

TIME-SPEED-DISTANCE (TSD) RALLYING – THE VERY BASICS

TSD rallies are run on public roads, in normal cars, at speeds that are at or below the legal limit for that road section of road

TSD rallying is NOT a race.

Rally teams are usually based on an in-car team of two. One person is the driver; the other one is the navigator.  It is possible (but not recommended) for one person to act as driver and navigator.

STAYING ON COURSE - STAYING ON TIME

If it’s not a race, what is TSD rallying?

You will be told exactly where to go, and at what AVERAGE speed you should travel. If you are able to go the AVERAGE speed between each pair of instructions you are ON TIME, and that is the object. If you are not arriving at each instruction on time, you must be either early or late, and you receive a penalty score.  The team with the fewest total penalties wins. A perfect rally means a score of ZERO (you were always exactly on time).

The first priority is to STAY ON COURSE by following the route instructions exactly and navigating the prescribed route.

The second priority is to STAY ON TIME by completing each leg in the prescribed time by maintaining the average speeds given in the instructions.

EQUIPMENT

The only equipment needed for a TSD rally is a car with a functioning odometer, a timing device (watch or stopwatch), and a pen or pencil to record times and distances on the scoring sheet.  The general instructions for the rally will be sent out about a week before the event, and the specific route instructions will be handed out at the driver’s meeting the morning of the event.

For those that may want to make a weekend of it and/or avoid the Saturday afternoon traffic going home, there are some inns and B&B's located in Urbanna just a short distance from the Tyer's home.  Rooms are available on a first come/first served basis and fill up for the summer, so don't delay making a reservation.
