Spend the weekend learning about military history!
On the weekend of May 18th, 2019, we’re planning an interesting day touring the National Infantry and Civil War Naval Museums. If you plan on driving down on Friday May 17th we’ve reserved a block of rooms at the Hampton Inn Columbus/South-Fort Benning. The room rate is $119 per night, however with taxes and fees it looks like it will really cost about $145 per night (includes breakfast). Call and make reservations directly with the hotel (706 660 5550). The hotel is the closet one to the Infantry Museum; about a quarter mile and well within walking distance. The block of rooms will be held until April 28th so reserve your room early by contacting the hotel at (706 660 5550). Mention you are with the Mercedes Club.
For those who come down on Friday we’ll meet up in the hotel meeting room Friday evening at 5 pm for conversation, car talk and of course to review the plans for Saturday. We'll leave there in time for an 8 pm dinner at Mabella's Italian Steakhouse in downtown Columbus. Please be aware that the room we will be eating in Friday night is not accessible by wheelchair; if this is an issue for you please contact the event organizer for alternate arrangements. If you plan on coming down Saturday, please plan on arriving by 8:30 am and meeting us in the lobby of the Hotel. We will have a full day of tours scheduled on Saturday.
On Saturday we'll start the day at 9 am with a guided tour of the Infantry Museum, then we’ll eat lunch at the Fife and Drum Restaurant inside the Museum. After lunch we’ll drive the short distance to the Civil War Naval Museum where we’ll be met by a guide in period sailor’s garb who will conduct us through the museum highlighting the life of a sailor as well as the naval aspects of the Civil War. Finally, we’ll witness the firing of the largest black powder weapon still being fired. There is also a car show taking place in the parking lot in front of the Infantry Museum on Saturday, so we might want to wander over a bit early.
On Saturday evening, for those staying over we’ll proceed to the Salt Cellar restaurant for a 5 pm dinner. Sunday will be unplanned to allow participants to explore on their own prior to departing for home. It will be a fun weekend of comradery, conversation and learning about our history. I’m sure Mercedes Benz automobiles will be a topic of conversation.
You won’t want to miss this weekend!
Registration for this weekend will close on May 11, 2019. Please be aware that the dinner locations will only accommodate 24 people, so sign up early if you planning to come to the dinners. The fee for the event will be $25.00 per person (this does not include lunch and dinners which will be paid individually).
