Climb Ascutney - Car and Motorcycle Hillclimb

Mt. Ascutney State Park

About this event

Spend a weekend in Vermont piloting your car or motorcycle up the Ascutney Mountain Auto Road. This is probably one of the best opportunities you will have to drive or ride a closed back road as fast as you want to for an entire weekend!

Hill climbing is often people's first "competition" event and we want this to be a fun experience for participants of every level. The great thing about hillclimb is that it's just you, the empty road, and the clock. There's no traffic, no need to look in your rearview mirror for other competitors, no speed limits or law enforcement on this closed course. The Ascutney Toll Road rises 2,300 vertical feet on a twisty 3.7 mile paved surface that has an average grade of 12%, with some areas graded at 19%. It's a blast to drive and ride. Unlike other hillclimb events at Ascutney, we will be running the full hill.

We have reserved the entire Ascutney State Park Campground for this event and welcome participants, spectators and volunteers to come spend the weekend.

If you would like to camp at the Ascutney State Park there is a 3 night minimum. Contact them directly at 802 674 2060 to reserve a site.

See our web site at www.climbascutney.com for more information, or contact Max Stratton or  with any questions.

Registration Fee: $175 for both days.

Event requirements

Who can enter:
If you are a driver or rider with a properly equipped vehicle, you can enter the hillclimb. All types of motorcycles are welcome. There will be an additional rookie orientation session on Saturday morning for those who can't make it from work to the mountain in time for the Friday evening orientation. If you are signing up for the first time, our registration system will ask you to enter your riding experience. This is so we can place you properly in the starting grid.

There are divisions for production, modified and street vehicles - for cars, a roll cage is not required to race in the street class. Hillclimbers with previous experience or who are licensed with a sanctioning body can provide their membership number for immediate entry.  (USCRA, AMA, SCCA, VSCCA or NEHA, NASA, AMA, Rally America, etc.) Novice hillclimbers are welcome. If you have never competed in a hillclimb before or any type of competition event, you may be asked to submit a riding/driving resume (race school, track day, autocross, rally cross etc) prior to being granted entry so we can place you on the starting grid in an appropriate position.

We have geared this event towards first-time hillclimbers and will conduct novice orientations on Friday night and Saturday morning. If you are a regular hillclimber, you will see tons of time on the hill during this event. We are a friendly group of people who are out to have fun. We are a group that encourages newcomers and invite you to come play with us on Mount Ascutney!

All vehicles will need to complete a technical inspection the morning of the event and you will be required to sign liability waivers. As with all competitive motorsport events, you will be required to wear and/or carry specific safety devices.  Competitors must produce a valid driver/rider license and medical insurance coverage card at sign up.

Please see the Hillclimb Rules and Technical Requirements at www.climbascutney.com/competition.

Format:
This event follows a typical Hillclimb time trial format. Competitors are released onto the closed auto road at regular intervals and are timed from bottom to top. At the top of your run, you wait until the other vehicles to finish and then all drive/ride down together in a line. We have volunteer checkpoints at multiple points on the hill to check progress and monitor the racing surface for safety. The hill will be open all day on Saturday for timed practice runs and all day on Sunday for timed race runs. If all goes smoothly, you will get multiple runs in the morning and afternoon each day. Please see the documents section at www.climbascutney.com/competition for schedule and registration class information.
