Event Description

North Star BMW CCA would like you to join us for our first Zoom Wine Tasting event in conjunction with Sunfish Cellars.   The event will be conducted by Hoyt Hill, Wine Director/Sommelier for Sunfish Cellars, and Osteria I Nonni.

Hoyt is a veteran of almost a half a century in the hotel and wine industries.  He is the only Certified Advanced Sommelier in Minnesota.  He was a partner and wine director of a Wine Spectator Grand Award Restaurant in 1994 and a semifinalist for the James Beard Award for Wine and Spirits Professionals of the Year in 2005.  Serena Sutcliffe, the director of Sotheby’s Wine Department, called Hoyt the “Best Big Event Sommelier in the World” in her book Chateau Haut Brion.

We asked Hoyt to choose wines he feels offer the most performance for your dollar.  Hoyt selected the following wines for the North Star Club Wine Tasting:

2018 Ponce Clos Lojen

The 2018 Clos Lojen is pure Bobal that fermented with full clusters in oak vats and then matured for six months in 10,000- and 15,000-liter oak vats. It's pure and easy to drink from a cool and fresh year. This feels quite young, and even if it's more primary than the 2017, the background feels more like it, with subdued minerality. The palate is balanced, with moderate alcohol (it's only 12%!) and with a dry, serious, stony texture. It's an easy but mineral red—think a Morgon from granite soils. Very good value for the money. Drink now through 2022.    91+ points from The Wine Advocate

2018 Chateau Negly La Clape la Cote

The 2018 La Clape La Cote is loaded with sexy raspberry fruit, spiced up with hints of green peppercorn, pomegranate, and orange zest. A tank-aged blend of Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, it's medium-bodied and very drinkable despite weighing in at 14.5% alcohol. The tannins are ripe and silky, adding just the right amount of texture to this fluid, easy-drinking red. Drink it over the next few years.  91 points from The Wine Advocate

2018 Selvapiana Chianti Rufina

Bright ruby red in color, with perfumes of ripe blackberry fruit, red cherry, and a touch of spice. On the palate, it is ripe and juicy but still fine and elegant in the Selvapiana style, with a tight structure and lifted, floral finish with refreshing acidity
