AZ PCA Track Day @ AMP

Arizona Motorsports Park

About this event

Please join us at Arizona Motorsports Park for the first Driver Education event of the 2020/2021 season. For this event, we will run the track counter-clockwise.  Plan on a full day of fun- gates open at 6:30 AM with the first car out on track at 8:30 AM.  Five 20-minute sessions for each run group will be scheduled.

Special Rules for Novices and Non-Solo Approved Drivers:

Due to COVID regulations, we will only be offering lead / follow instruction for solo approved drivers.  If you have not been approved to drive solo yet, we are prequalifying drivers at our AZ PCA Autocrosses held at AMP.  You will need to attend an AZ-PCA AutoX event and get approved by an instructor there for solo driving at our HPDE events.  Keep in mind that attending the AutoX event does not guarantee approval into the non-solo group at an HPDE- adequate car control and ability to drive at speed must be exhibited.  This will be the case for all novice and non-solo approved drivers until we are able to offer in-car instruction again at our HPDE events.   If you "graduate" into our beginner solo group in this fashion, you will be assigned and required to have an instructor via lead/follow instruction.

Our first AutoX event will be held on September 26.  If you attend this event and meet our instructors' criteria, you will be allowed to drive in our entry-level solo group at this Oct 3 HPDE.   Our September 26 AutoX event can be found here:  Please reach out to Kim Kemper, the organizer of the AutoX event, after registering and let him know you need to be evaluated for solo approval for our HPDE events.

A speed and experience level for everyone: There will be several different "run groups" which will be separated by experience/skill level: Novice, Intermediate, Experienced and Advanced.  There is a run group for everyone- so don't hesitate to sign up if you have little to no experience on track.

To ensure everyone registered has a good time at the track, the amount of cars in each run group is limited.  Sign up early to avoid being waitlisted!

Track Tours (new):  If you are not quite ready for the full track day experience, there is a special session called "Track Tour", where you can drive your own car on the track at a more comfortable speed, akin to "parade laps".  There will be instructors driving their own cars that will guide you around the track- all you have to do is follow them.  Passengers are allowed only for this specific "Track Tour" session.

Instructors are free!  If this will be your first time attending a track day with AZ PCA or if you have not yet been approved to drive solo, you will be provided an instructor to ride along with you as well as classroom instruction to make the most of your day.  Even if it is not your first time or if you have never driven at Arizona Motorsports Park before, AZ PCA can accommodate (and encourages) an instructor ride-along to hone your driving skills. This will be the case for all novice and non-solo approved drivers until we are able to offer in-car instruction again at our HPDE events.

Wanna just hang out and lend a hand? We are always looking for folks to help us run these events.  If you'd like to volunteer to help us, we'd love that!  There is a registration option for volunteering and you can pick from several different roles of participation.

Registration fees:

  •  $165.00 full track day
  •  $25.00 Track Tour only
Not a PCA member yet?  Don't own a Porsche? That's okay- non PCA members are still welcome to participate or volunteer!

If you are a Porsche owner but do not yet have a PCA membership, you can sign up today at  Annual membership is $46 and comes with other benefits, however, PCA membership is NOT a requirement to attend this event.

Event requirements

Pre-Registration Requirements:

Age & License Requirements

You must be at least 18 years old and possess a valid driver's license to participate in this event. You will be required to present your driver's license at check-in.

Speedwaiver Requirement (New)

Speedwaiver is a new method of electronically signing the required PCA waivers to attend driving events.  Historically, we have had attendees sign these waivers in person at the gates during check-in.  However, this new process allows you to sign the waivers electronically, utilizing your smart phone (You must have a smart phone to e-sign).  After you have registered for the event, you'll be provided a link to sign the waivers.  You'll need to type your name and cell phone number.  A text message will then be sent to your phone to start the electronic signature process.  After sucessfully signing the waivers, a link will be provided to access your signatures.  You'll need to show this proof to the person at the gate, so don't forget to bring your cell phone!

Helmets / Clothing

You must have a Snell rated (SA2010 or SA2015) automotive helmet. Open-faced and closed-face style helmets are permitted, however, motorcycle helmets are not permitted- these usually have the designation "M" preceeding the year i.e. M2010 or M2015.  If you do not own a helmet that meets those requirement, AZ PCA has used helmets available in very limited quantity and size at the track FOR PURCHASE ONLY.  Due to COVID-19 concerns, they are not available for rent, but for purchase for $35.  Please specify that you may need to purchase one during the registration process. Closed toe shoes are required and pants are preferred (no shorts please).  Attendees and any guest(s) will be required to sign a liability waiver form at the track entrance.

Check-in / Schedule

Check-in at the track is will be conducted at the gate entry to the track. Gates open at 6:30 am and check-in closes at approximately 7:30 am when the driver's meeting starts.  A schedule will be provided at check-in.

Track Tours: Track tour will be the first session of the day. You must be present for the driver's meeting at 7:30 am.

Driver Check-In Requirements and Drivers Meeting

Check in will be conducted at the gate entry to the track - Prepare for a line.  You must check in at the gate prior to the mandatory driver's meeting that starts at approximately 7:30 am to document that you are present.  When you check in at the gate, you will need to present your Driver's License- please make sure you have it on hand with you so that we can provide you your registration packet.  The registration packet consists of the day's schedule, vehicle safety tech form, track map, and wrist bands for your run group. Check in closes 5 minutes before the driver's meeting starts- if you have not (at minimum) checked in at the gate before the meeting starts, you will not be permitted to participate in the event and your registration may be forfeited per the cancellation terms.  Prepare for a line at the gate and arrive early. You have a one hour window to check in- from approximately 6:30 am to 7:30 am.

Vehicle Pre-Technical Inspection and Vehicle Numbers

A pre-technical inspection is to be performed on your car prior to the event (exception: Track Tour participants do not need to complete).  If you are qualified to complete the inspection on your own, you may do so i.e. self-tech is ok.  Otherwise, have a shop perform the tech inspection for you.  If you are self-tech'ing, print your name on the form where it states "Tech Inspector Name"

Download and print out the pre-tech form here:  2019-2020 AZ PCA Driver Tech Form.pdf

Complete the pre-tech form and bring it with you to the event.  You will turn it in when the final safety tech is performed at the event.

If you are not qualified nor know someone that is qualified to perform the pre-tech inspection, the following two shops are able to perform the pre-tech inspection for you:

McIlvain Motors in Tempe, AZ

Beck's European in N. Scottsdale, AZ

The final safety tech at the morning of the event will consist of checking for: Loose objects in the car, functioning brake light, gas cap and battery secure, wheel lugs torqued, any leaking fluids, approved helmet, proper attire, and car numbers in place (you will choose your car number during the registration process here).  Vehicle numbers are to be placed on both the driver and passenger door.

The final safety tech form will be provided to you when you check in at the gate the morning of the event.  You will then take your car with your two tech forms (the pre-tech and final safety tech form) to the vehicle tech area to have it checked for final safety and that your car numbers are in place.  It is recommended that you get to the event early to avoid long lines at vehicle tech.

Harnesses and HANS Devices

If your vehicle has a multi-point harness system, you are also required to utilize a head and neck restraint system (HANS device). Because the PCA rule of equal restraint applies, if there will be a passenger in your car (such as an instructor) there must be both a harness system and a HANS device available and used by that passenger.

Convertibles must have roll-over protection- either built in from the OEM, or aftermarket. Porsche convertibles from the beginning of the Boxster era have adequate built-in roll over protection from the factory. Convertibles should be driven with the top-up. If there is no convertible top, hand restraints must be worn.

Sound Restrictions for AMP

Arizona Motorsports Park has city sound restrictions of 96dB and in order to run your car at this track, your car must not exceed this sound limit.   Sound testing will be conducted for any cars that have not been previously tested during the morning of the event, immediately following safety tech.  If your car does not meet the sound restrictions during testing, your entry fee will be refunded to you. Do not attempt to "cheat" the sound meter during testing- if you exceed the sound restrictions while on track during a driving session, your current or remaining driving sessions may be subject to immediate termination with no entry fee refund, and an additional fee may be imposed, depending on the severity of the sound violation(s).
