About this event

August 2015 DIY Tech Session

Saturday, August 22nd 9a-2p
DIY Auto Repair in Olathe

Summer is here - and its time to get going on those car projects.

It must be time for the third installment of Fools With Tools.... er, Wrenches and Coffee DIY session.

Food: Coffee, bagels & donuts provided, whether you be wrenching or just visiting.

NOTE: You must bring your own tools. DIY provides the lifts, plus catch basins for oil and coolant. DIY also has tire mounting and balancing equipment (cost extra). The Club has some of the special tools required for suspension work and other maintenance on E36 and E46.

All club members are welcome! If you've never been to one of our DIY/Tech Sessions, it's a great place to jump into maintaining your BMW yourself. We have members with lots of experience working on our favorite cars. Start with something small like an oil change or let us know if you have something more specific you want to tackle. Even if you don't have something you need done to your BMW, stop by, say hi, and see what we're all about.

As always, we ask volunteers with experience working on our beloved Bimmers to attend and help keep things running smoothly. Please contact the registrar if you are able to volunteer.

Jobs can include things like:

* Oil changes, diff and trans fluid changes

* Brakes

* Brake fluid flush

* Cooling systems

* Tire swap

* Other miscellaneous preparations for the track

Make sure to order any parts you need ahead of time.

Since the shop charges by the hour those bringing cars for maintenance/repair will need to pay a small fee. To give you an idea what that might be, the highest rate the shop charges is $20/hr. The shop takes cash, check, or credit card and you'll square up with the shop directly. It's open all day and you are welcome to stay at the shop and continue working after the club event is over.

BMW CCA members get 25% off!

Two post lift is $20/hr. ($15 with club discount)

Mid-lift is $15/hr. ($11.25 with club discount)

Regular bay is $10/hr. ($7.50 with club discount)

$10 per tire mount and balance. ($7.50 per tire with club discount)

Event requirements

DIY tech sessions are a great way to meet other club members, learn more about your car, or just visit!  Of course, there's also work being done!  Experience not  necessary - that's never stopped the rest of us!

We will contact each registrant to finalize times and details of their work.  Please be on time and let us know immediately of any changes to your schedule, parts lost in shipping, etc.

The DIY Shop is a great resource and we will have club members available to assist; however, we do ask that each participant have a plan for completing their project.  The club offers this event for its members only.  Not sure what the club is all about?  Stop by and visit - introduce yourself and see the fun!

Here are some details about the tech session:

  • The event starts at 9am, and will conclude at 2pm.  The shop is open until 8pm; however, so feel free to stay late!
  • For those working on their cars, you will need to bring basic hand tools, rags, fluid transfer pumps, etc.  The shop provides fluid disposal and has air tools available for use.
  • Please be sure that you have all parts, tools, notes, etc. necessary to complete your project.  We're here to help, but this is DIY!  :)
  • Your car will be positioned on the lift by DIY Shop personnel or club tech session volunteers.
  • All participants MUST sign the event waiver.
  • Club Toolbox - we will send out more details on this item shortly.  The club will soon have special BMW tools available for use (for a small fee) at tech sessions.
  • Any fees due for facilities use will be payable to the DIY Shop.  The shop accepts cash, check, or credit cards.

Previous tech sessions have featured a wide range of maintenance tasks, performance upgrades, and repairs.  Please do not hesitate to contact the registrar with any questions about registration, the tech session, possible projects, etc.
