MEET: 8:45 AM, I-65, Exit #282, Marathon Gas Station
DEPART: 9:15 AM Sharp!
BRUNCH/LUNCH: 10:45 – Chef Troy’s Talk of the Town, Houston AL
WHEELER TOUR: 1:00 PM
Meet up at 8:45AM at I-65 Exit 282. We will gather at the the Marathon Gas Station (aka Wayne's Package Store) at the northwest corner of the intersection. We will depart at 9:15AM sharp for an hour run to brunch. Be prepared for some awesome roads include an amazing uphill hairpin turn that will make you wish you could go back and do it again. Be on the lookout for that 1943 Boeing Stearman Biplane as we pass Campbell Air Field en-route.
We will arrive at 10:15AM for a Cajun brunch in Houston, AL at Chef Troy's Talk of the Town. Chef Troy is known throughout the southeast for his outstanding selection of Cajun food, however Troy also offers an extensive selection of Dixie and Yankee selections for breakfast. Before we hit the road at 11:45AM, make sure you wander across the street to visit the only remaining log jail in Alabama, built in 1868.
With our tummy's full, we will continue to enjoy some of the best roads in scenery in northwest Alabama as we make our way through the Bankhead Forest curves for an hour to Pond Spring, home of General Joe Wheeler for a private one-hour tour at 1PM. http://alabama.travel/places-to-go/pond-spring-the-general-joe-wheeler-home The plantation was established in 1818 with the current home build in the 1870s. Once of 17,000 acres, this 50 acre historic site include various structures dating back to 1818 as well as the plantation home. General Wheeler was a national figure, serving as a Confederate Cavalry officer, a member of the U. S. House of Representatives, and a U. S. major general during the Spanish-American War.
