That is pretty much all most of us know about tires until the day comes when one of them goes POP, BANG or thumpa thumpaclunka as it goes from being full of air to being flat. Do we need to know more about tires other than they come round, black and made of rubber?

Yes we need to know more. Not so that we can sit around on a bar stool spouting off rolling resistance factors, or tread designs that are best at heat dissipation, or grip ratios.
