General Instructions

Welcome to The Blacke 2013 Road Rallye.  This Rallye is an SCCA Regional Road Rallye, as well as, part of the ASCC Winter Rallye Series.  Sunset is at 4:44 p.m., so the rallye will run entirely at night.  External night lighting will be helpful.  Interior lights will be very useful.  A GPS is not essential, but will be helpful.  I used a Garmin Nuvi 350.  Your GPS will allow you to see intersections before you get there, as well as, which way the roads go over crests.  In addition, we will be giving out pickup point information using latitude and longitude should you go astray or get late and want to pickup the rallye along the route.  AT&T coverage is spotty to non-existent in much of the rallye area.

Winter

Conditions can be anywhere from no snow to a foot or more. Usually there is no snow and roads should be in good shape.  Temperature should be in the mid-30’s.  I advise you to bring a blanket in case you have car trouble.

Tires

We recommend good winter tires, but it’s not a requirement.  I have run winter rallyes on good all-season tires without difficulty.

Timing, Scoring and Penalties

Official Time

Official time for this rallye will be synchronized to WWV.  An official clock will be available at Registration.  Make sure that your watch is set to the official time.  The schedule for this Rallye is based on the time for Car Zero.  The CZT (Car Zero Time) will be specified in the instructions.  Your scheduled time to leave that point is calculated by adding your car number to the minutes of the CZT.  Example:  If the CZT is 3:35 and you are Car 7, your time to leave that point is 3:42.

Scorecards

You will be provided with scorecards.  Please fill them out and turn them into the scoring personnel at the end of the rallye.

Scoring

Scoring will be based on your arrival time at the checkpoints.  Penalties will be assessed as follows:

  • 1 point for each hundredth of a minute early or late at a Checkpoint.

  • 25 points for stopping within sight of a Checkpoint.

  • 250 points (2-1/2 minutes) maximum score at any Checkpoint.

Measurement & Calculation

Course was measured using a 2007 Subaru WRX, equipped with a Timewise 798A. Input came from magnetic sensors attached to the driver side front drive shaft.  Tires were Bridgestone Potenza 215/45R17, inflated to 32 PSI.  Mileages where measured to the .001 mile and truncated to .01 miles.  Times will be given to .01 minute.  Where a stop or yield sign is present, the mileage is at the sign.  If no sign is present, the apex of center of the intersection is used.

Conditions on the day of measurement were 70-75 degrees and mostly cloudy.

Controls

Will be identified by standard SCCA checkpoint signs.  An example will be at Registration.  There are no out-markers or out-times, car zero points are used instead.  There are no controls on County Highways – consider them free zones.

Control Zones

The object of the rallye is to arrive at the checkpoints exactly on time.  There are ten checkpoint zones.  The start of the checkpoint zone will be specified by the instruction EFZ (End Free Zone).  A reference (usually a sign) will be specified, as well as a CZT and a CAST.  You should leave the EFZ instruction at your scheduled time, driving at the specified average speed.

All of the checkpoint zones will have a checkpoint.  The timing line will be identified by a checkpoint sign on the right side of the road.  You will be timed when your front tires pass the sign.  DO NOT STOP at the sign.  The workers will be located a short distance down the road and you should stop next to them to get your timing sticker.  Place the sticker in the appropriate box on your scorecard.  You then need to clear the area for the next car to enter.  The CAST no longer applies once you pass a checkpoint sign.

Time Allowances

Timing allowances must be in increments as indicated on the TA Slip.  If you find that you are behind schedule at a EFZ instruction, calculate how late you are and circle the appropriate time on a delay form.  Add the delay time to your original scheduled out time and leave that point at the new time.  Hand in the delay form at the checkpoint.  No Form, No Delay, No Exceptions!  If you are more than 20 minutes later than the CZT, the checkpoint crews will be gone.  Just keep following the instructions and enjoy the drive.  If you stop to help a fellow Contestant who is having trouble, there is no limit on delay time, however, someone needs to alert the next control or call the Rallye Master so controls are aware.

Delays, caused by circumstances beyond the Competitor’s control, which occur within sight of a control, shall be deemed witnessed by the Control Crew.  To avoid unsafe conditions at or near the timing line, TA’s may be taken for the exact amount of the delay and the Rallye Team shall cross the timing line without “creeping.”  What this means is, if you get stuck behind a slow moving vehicle that doesn’t turn off before the control, follow them into the control and ask for an exact delay (TA) equal to your lateness.  This is easier than taking a .50 TA and then encountering them again and being forced to take another minute TA.

Should extreme ice or snow conditions exist, we will use the Emergency Suspension of On-time Requirement:  Run at your own safe pace, measure the course and claim your calculated time of arrival at each open control.

Following the Course

The route instructions are easy to follow Tulips.  Instructions are to be completed in numerical order.  Each instruction will contain official mileage and a Tulip description of what action to take at the mileage.  You will get your routes when you register.  If you have any questions, ask them before or during the Driver’s Meeting.

The correct course at each intersection is determined by applying the following priority list in the order shown:

  1. Proceed as directed by the Tulip.

  2. Proceed ahead on the road you are on.  If there is a doubt, follow your nose.

Roads

Roads marked “DEAD END” or “NO OUTLET” or obvious driveways (usually have a Fire Number) do not exist.  They may show up as a dashed line on a Tulip.

Signs

Signs maybe referenced in a Tulip.  If words are in “” they are on signs used for the NRI mileage.  If not in “” they are reference only and may not be found at the NRI.

Route Instructions

Column one is the Numbered Route Instruction (NRI).  They are to be completed in numerical order.  Column two is the Official Mileage possibly truncated to the hundredths of a mile.  Column three is the Interval Mileage between the previous NRI and the next NRI.

A Tulip is a simplified drawing of the intersection at the NRI.  You enter from the bottom of the diagram and leave following the arrow. Tulip instructions are in the third column and reference the name of a road at the NRI.  Column five has the timing instructions.

Glossary

CAST – Commence Average Speed To.  Average speed to calculate exact arrival time at ceckpoint.

CZT – Car Zero Time.  The time an imaginary car leaves a given point.  Add your number to this time to achieve your time at the NRI.

BFZ – Begin Free Zone.  A zone along the route with no timing controls.

EFZEnd Free Zone.  Leave at the specified car zero time, plus your car number in minutes.

Stop – An Official Stop Sign you are obligated to stop at.

Miscellaneous

The most important thing on a rallye is stay on course.  If you go more than three miles without encountering a NRI you are off course.  Return to the last action point and attempt to get back on course.  If you get lost you won’t have a good time.

One of the most important thing for you to do is to get your watch set properly to Official Time, available at Registration, you should adjust your watch to match it exactly.  Getting good scores should be easy - if you leave the EFZ at the proper time.

There is a break along the way.  Gas and restrooms are available.  You should have about 20 minutes.  The Rallye Master Phone Number is 414/378-6404.  If you get lost or drop out – call or text.  We may not have a sweep car, so if you get stuck – you may need to call for help or try the nearest home.
