Aloha!

Sunday, July 21, will be our next autocross.

And we have some great improvements that we will be implementing.

We will need your help, cooperation and feedback to make this work.

After hosting Evolution Performance Driving School, several things became obvious. One was that students repeatedly remarked that they really enjoyed the quicker courses (created by Evolution’s instructors.)

It was also noted that they were far simpler and were easier to navigate with few multiple crossover sections.

Next, all drivers were required to be “gridded” and “race ready” before the next “heat” finished. This insured a flawless flow to the day’s action. On some courses we even ran two cars at once.

And we ran shorter, faster courses - and more of them! How about running the same course you ran in the morning again - but in reverse in the afternoon! That’s doubling your runs! These are all things we’d like to try at the next event.

The following was put together by Roy Whitney, our SOLO Chief, to help explain these changes.

Brian Dorr, RE

Considering these changes to the way we run our autocross:

Start earlier!

Registration closes at 8:30 am

Course set up by 8:30 am

Tech closes at  9:00 am

Driver meeting at 9:15 am

Course walk at 9:30 am

First car out at 10:00 am

Design shorter tracks that fast drivers can complete in 40-45 seconds

Run two full sessions.  All drivers in the morning and again in the afternoon for a total of 8 runs each.  Change direction of the course for the afternoon session.

Drivers running in heat 3 and 4 work heats 1 and 2 with no change of position.  Tie work location to order eg. If driver is running 1st in heat one they will work corner 1 in heat 3 and 4 etc.  This amounts to two heats working, one heat driving and one heat off.  Take a 5 or ten minute break between heats 2 and 3 for worker change.  Also suggest that we have a separate staging area for cars running in the upcoming heat.  Drivers should be at or near their cars ready to go.

Add an additional course worker along the fence on the back straight bringing the total to 6 workers plus timing.  This will save time and avoid the worker having to run from the infield every time a cone goes down out back.

How it looks on paper….

10:00 first car out, 45 seconds plus righting cones per car.  If we round up to 2 minutes per car, heat one is over at 10:30.

If we have properly staged, heat two begins immediately afterward but let’s say it takes 10 minutes…

10:40 first car of heat 2 on the track.  Heat 2 completes at 11:10.

10 minute break to change out workers and get heat 3 drivers to their cars and on the grid.  Also have heat 4 starting to stage.

11:20 Heat 3 first car out.

11:50 Heat 4 first car out.

12:20 lunch and pointer cone changes, timing light move to reverse the track.

1:00 start it all over again and be done by 3:30
