Early Zone Office Managers Historical Event

by Steve Robinson, Technical Director

We last visited with two of the early Zone Service Managers in January 2011, with 38 members and guests attending.  It was such an overwhelming success, that we thought it only appropriate to bring back Otto Hofmann and Reinhold Zimmerman for another conversation.  Otto and Reinhold were the third and fourth managers to lead the South San Francisco Zone Office/Vehicle Preparation Center/Training Center for MBNA, the forerunner of MBUSA.  They were responsible for overseeing dealer service representatives and helping Mercedes-Benz owners resolve service issues.  They also helped set the standards for running the Zone Office, establishing the Vehicle Preparation Center and providing high-quality technical and service training for dealer service representatives.  As a point of interest, the VPC was the first point where the condition of all new Mercedes was assessed after transit by truck and cargo ship from the factories in Germany.  Here anything was necessary was added to meet federal and state requirements, such as smog controls and sealed-beam headlights.  Any damage that occurred in transit was also taken care of.

For those of you who were unable to experience the 2011 event (or even if you want to experience it again), this is your chance to gain extensive insight into the early years of Mercedes-Benz in the United States and ask questions about the cars from the 60's through the 90's that came through the Zone Office/VPC/Training Center.

Come and listen to these two very special gentlemen and you will be truly entertained by their humor and energy.  You will hear stories of movie stars looking over their shoulder as their cars were worked on and  recounts of driving dignitaries to Sacramento from San Francisco in Mercedes 600 limousines.  And in addition to all this, Reinhold is bringing pictures, slides, and a movie of early 300 SL racing in California.  This is an event you will not want to miss.
