The cost for this event is $450 per student. New opportunity for Family and Friends of Students- see below! Watkins Glen is one of the premier race tracks in the world. The list of legendary drivers that have graced the streets of Watkins Glen and the twists of Watkins Glen International is nearly second to none. The stars of all forms of racing – F1, IRL, sports car, open-wheel, and stock car – have come to The Glen for 60 years and many have left their mark on its history. The track is about three and a half miles long, with eleven turns and several impressive uphill and downhill sections and is known for its challenging elevation changes. The track is situated high on a hillside, with expansive views of Seneca Lake. The town of Watkins Glen sits at the foot of Seneca Lake, the largest and deepest of New York’s Finger Lakes, in the very middle of Finger Lakes Wine Country. Immediately to the north of the town, on either side of the lake, there are dozens of vineyards each with its own shops with free wine tastings. There are also spas, shopping and museums in the area for spouses who might want to make the trip but not spend a lot of time at the track. Registration and Tech inspection will take place at the Seneca Lodge on Sunday evening, 7/19 from 3 PM until 6 PM. While this is the preferred option, Tech will also be open Monday morning at the track but timing will be critical, so come Sunday afternoon, relax, check out the other cars and meet your fellow drivers. Driving Safety Class for Student Guests:
Another great reason to bring the family to Watkins Glen this summer!
Open to family and guests of student drivers (licensed or permitted drivers), this 2-hour class by Mitch Epstein will be held on Monday, August 20th.
About the class
“Increasing the Odds: What you should have learned in Drivers’ Ed” is an interactive, instructor-led class that focuses on real-world driving safety and car control issues that are generally not covered in traditional drivers’ education classes.
Designed around an equation (Time * Control = Options), the class discusses strategies for increasing both time to react and car control which, when combined, provide a greater number of options to avoid accidents. We’ll also discuss general safety, distractions, impairments, social pressures, safe outlets for those who do enjoy driving fast, opportunities for hands-on learning such as teen driving clinics and HPDEs, and even a bit about auto maintenance and new technologies. Depending on the participants, the class may also cover challenges specific to new drivers and new parents.
The class will be led by Mitch Epstein, a 20+ year member of the Audi Club, who has been instructing students, both in-car and in-class, for nearly 20 years.
The cost will be $15 per student and includes a commemorative gift and diploma.
Requirements for attending
The student driver must preregister his or her family member or friend on motorsportreg.com and answer the questions on the form. (This will help us with logistics and ensure that relevant topics are highlighted.) If you have already signed up for Watkins Glen please and now wish to sign up for this package please email me (bruce.bradigan@gmail.com) and I will add the package to your current registration. You will then have an opportunity to go back in to MSR and pay for it. If you have not registered for WG II yet, please register and select the package as usual.
The class size will be limited to 15 participants. This is to ensure an interactive session during which there is time for everyone to participate. We will establish a wait list if the class fills up and will consider a second session on Tuesday should demand warrant.
Bonus Opportunity for Attendees of Mitch's class
Want to take a ride around Watkins Glen International, one of the most famous and exhilarating road courses in the United States? Class participants are eligible, at no additional cost, to join one of NEQ's instructors for some hot laps around the circuit where you’ll be able to see and experience many of the topics discussed during the class.
If you have already signed up for Watkins Glen please and now wish to sign up for this package please email me (bruce.bradigan@gmail.com) and I will add the package to your current registration. Wounded Warrior Project Motorsport HD Hero 2 GoPro raffle:
We will be raffling off this $300 value camera (http://gopro.com/cameras/hd-hero2-motorsports-edition/) for $20 per ticket which will be available during the event for purchase at our Trailer. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to this most worthwhile program. Some of you may know that we have been providing a special on-track experience for Wounded Warriors at out Lime Rock Park event in May, and this is just an extension of that extremely rewarding, to those of us who have participated, program.
Dennis Cohan Car Detailing and Tire Temperature Consultation:
Those of you who attended our New Jersey Motorsport Park and/or our Watkins Glen I events probably already know what Dennis can do in detailing a car. He has been back to the P21 warehouse and has picked up even more new supplies to demonstrate what these high quality products can do, and to raffle some of them off. Dennis will also be ready with his pyrometer to measure your tire temperatures and help you learn how the temperature variation between tire and across the surface of each tire can indicate adjustments that will improve your tires’ handling and wear. Dennis can be found in the front of the Kendal garage.
Rooms are also available at the Watkins Glen Harbor Hotel starting at $145 for a village view and $165 for a lake view. This is a special rate for track clubs and you must ask for the "Watkins Glen Car Club" rate.
