Mid-Atlantic Alfa Romeo Club on VIR North 2010
Virginia Int'l Raceway-North CourseAbout this event

Back to Our Roots Small Bore Driving School
(3.5 Liter Displacement Limit on Student Cars)
Beginner/Novice through Advanced Run Groups
One of the Mid-Atlantic Alfa Romeo Club’s most popular events has been our weekend of driving with Peter Krause and his vintage racing friends. The Alfa Club is known for its trademark “laid back pasta eaters” approach to driving schools. The vintage drivers bring their own laid back approach to motorsports with their fleet of historic vintage race cars. As in past years, the two clubs share the track in separate run sessions. The Alfa Club conducts a driving school that is interspersed with the vintage racers’ practice, qualifying and race sessions.
This year, our driving school will accommodate Beginner/Novice (back after a two-year hiatus), Intermediate, and Advanced run groups. Each of our run groups will get three sessions a day, twenty-five minutes each plus classroom instruction.
For the fifth consecutive year, we will follow our enthusiastically received small-bore theme. We will again limit the Intermediate and Advanced student groups to cars with nominal displacements at or under 3.5 liters. Although some of our best friends drive big cars with big motors, the small-bore limitation keeps the run groups just a bit more homogeneous, reducing speed differentials, particularly at the ends of the long straightaways. (Please note that there is no displacement limitation for instructor cars.)
This year, we will not limit engine displacement in the Beginner/Novice group (zero to 2 previous events). No, the Alfa Club has not invested in a body shop or in Armco futures! We’re relaxing the displacement limit in the Beginner/Novice group to maximize participation of those new to the world of High Performance Driver Education. Our instructors will ensure that all of that unnecessary extra power is applied judiciously, in keeping with the spirit of the event.
The small-bore theme returns us to the tenor of our early schools, when the grids were predominantly made up of Alfas and other small cars. So bring your old Alfas & Porsches and your new Miatas, BMWs & Z-cars. Bring them and come mix it up in the paddock with an eclectic mix of vintage racing cars. Join us too for our Saturday evening banquet (We’ve again made the banquet optional in an effort to keep costs down for the basic event.)
Registration:
Non-member Student $370
Member Student $355
(AROC, Tarheel Sports Car Club, Triangle Z Club & 02 Group)
Approved Instructors No Fee
Saturday Evening Banquet (Optional): $25
Weekend Camping - Available at extra cost upon arrival at gate.
Don't miss Peter Krause's Saturday lunchtime "Paddock Walk". Peter (in Nomex madras sportcoat) will share his encyclopedic knowledge of the various historic cars in the paddock.

Event requirements
This event is a two-day High Performance Driving Event (HDPE). We will be sharing track time (in separate run sessions) with Peter Krause's vintage racing friends – MAARC will have 2/3 of the allocated track time. Students (& Instructors) will receive three 25-minute driving sessions each day as well as classroom instruction between sessions. There will not be Time Trials at this event.
Students will be grouped into three groups:
Green: Beginner/Novice (No previous experience or one previous HPDE event.)
Yellow: Intermediate (Previous completion of at least 2 HPDE events or approved
equivalent.)
Blue: Advanced
Note: In order for us to assign you to the most appropriate run group, it is absolutely essential that your past event history be up-to-date in your MotorsportReg.com (MSR) account. If you have participated in HPDE events where you did not use MSR to register, you must manually add this experience into your MSR data.
Instruction is included in your entry fee. All students will have an instructor with the exception of advanced students who whose driving experience is directly known to us and who receive advance approval to drive solo.
Instructors will be in the White group.
If you're an experienced driving instructor and this kind of event appeals to you, please send your instructor resume and two references to Steve Margolis (Steve will handle instructor registrations). Instructors with an interest in vintage cars and rear wheel drive experience are especially welcome. If you’ve instructed with us before, you should see an order entry for an Instructor Entry Fee when you go to the Registration Form (the next screen). If you don’t see such an item, our laid back record keeping may have lost your instructor listing. Just contact Steve Margolis and he’ll set you up again. Your past instructor listing might also go unrecognized if you’ve got more than one MotorsportReg.com account. Ron Weddle will be our Chief Instructor and will handle group and instructor asignments. You may contact Steve or Ron with any instructor-related questions.
Technical Inspection: All cars must have a pre-event technical inspection (Form in Word format). MAARC also accepts the Tarheel Sports Car Club / Triangle Z Club 2010 annual inspection sticker. All open cars (convertibles) must have an aftermarket roll bar meeting club specifications. Please be aware that factory roll hoops ( Z3/Z4, S2000, TT) are not acceptable (see our roll bar specification for discussion of exception for Porsche Boxter).
Lodging, in several grades, is available at the track in the Villas at South Bend, Garage-Hospitality Suites, and The Lodge (434/822-2680). Camping is also available at the track - for more information, see this link. We will not have a headquarters hotel for this event. Many of us will be staying at the Danville Sleep Inn, which can be reached at 434-793-6090. The Sleep Inn in is a modern & well kept hotel that is relatively convenient to the track. Mention the Alfa Romeo Club to get the event rates. Other lodging options are available in the area surrounding the track - see this link.
On-site registration will be held Friday from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at VIR's North Paddock Driver's Classroom. We will also conduct registration on Saturday morning, but urge you to register on Friday night, if possible, in order to reduce the rush on Saturday morning.
This event will run RAIN or SHINE.
