The purpose of the Ladies’ School is to introduce women to SCCA Solo (“autocross”).
Autocross is a “slow-speed driver skill contest” where single lap times are used to determine the winner. Autocross events are usually held in large parking lots or on inactive airport runways. The courses, defined by orange traffic cones, are designed such that most cars will not be required to be driven in a gear higher than second gear and no faster than driven on the highway. The emphasis is car control, especially when cornering. This school is designed for women who have never autocrossed before, or who have less than two years experience. Participant safety is our number one priority. SCCA Solo Safety Stewards approve the course and are present the whole day. Our main goal is that the students have fun and build confidence as they learn:
· The basics of analyzing the course during the course walk
· Basic car handling techniques and driving skills
· Competitive driving strategies.
Cars will be inspected for safety (“Technical Inspection” – a.k.a. “Tech”) before being allowed to participate. (Refer to check list, next page)
The instructors for this school are talented women who are experienced competitors – most being multi-time regional and national Solo champions. We have instructors available with expertise in Front, Rear and All-Wheel Drive cars.
“Sponsors” (parents, spouses, boyfriends, partners, significant others, friends) are encouraged to help out and volunteer as workers to support the event.
Students are encouraged to bring their own helmets that meet current SCCA requirements (SNELL 2000 or newer). For those who do not already own a helmet, loaner helmets will be available.
What the school is not:
This school is not to intended to teach someone how to drive a car, a “Teen Safe Driving School” or an introduction to driving or learning to drive a manual transmission (“stick shift”). Although new drivers with a “learner’s permit” are allowed, participants should already have a basic competency in their vehicle’s operation and basic car controls established in the car that they will be driving in the school. No special competition licenses or certificates will be issued at the conclusion of the course.

Car Checklist
1. Bring a tire air pressure gauge. Before arrival, add extra air to the tires at a gas station or bring a tank of compressed air or a portable tire inflation pump. It is important to add a few pounds of air to the tires to assure proper performance and protect tires from improper wear. Tire pressures will be monitored frequently and air pressure added or bled down many times during the day.
2. Tires must be in good/safe condition and have sufficient tread appropriate for the tire. Mismatched tires adversely affect handling (i.e. different brands/models/tread designs).
3. Bring the correct lug wrench and check the lug nuts on the wheels to assure that the nuts are tight.
4. Check to assure that the wheel bearings are tight. If you do not know how to do this check properly, ask.
5. Assure that the battery is secure.
6. Check all fluids (oil, coolant, brake fluid, clutch fluid, transmission, power-steering). Cars should not be leaking fluids.
7. The brake pedal must work and not be “spongy” (indicates air in the brake system)
8. The safety belt must be in good condition and functioning.
9. The steering wheel should be tight. Seats must be firmly secured to the car and stay in position.
10. The throttle, if controlled by a spring, must function properly. The throttle pedal must not stick and must spring back to the “off” position crisply.
11. All (and we mean all) loose items must be removed from the interior of the car and all trunks. Check under seats to assure there is nothing that will roll out – especially on the driver’s side.
12. In-car cameras must be mounted securely in accordance with SCCA rules.
Additional Safety Requirements:
· Held under the SCCA Solo Rules and the CSCC Solo Supplemental Regulations.
