2008 TZC/THSCC Instructor Clinic / Lapping Day

Carolina Motorsports Park

About this event

This is the third year of the TZC/THSCC annual instructor clinic.  In an effort to maintain the highest possible standards for our events, and to provide the best in-car instruction out there, we require that all new instructors, and instructors who may not have instructed within the last year or more, attend this clinic.  We will continue to utilize 'mini clinics' (where we invite two or three individuals to instruct and be evaluated and mentored throughout a normal HPDE weekend) when needed.  This clinic is mandatory for any new instructor candidate, any instructor with less than 10 events instructing with a national club, or any instructor who has not instructed in the last 2 years or more.  All new instructor applicants must fill out and return our new instructor application form.

We also require our current instructors to attend at least one clinic every couple years to shake the rust off, catch up on new protocols, and generally get refreshed and reinvigorated about instructing.  This would be a perfect opportunity to satisfy that requirement.  We use current instructors as mentors to the "potentials" so you must have  a car with a passenger seat and equal restraints available.

The clinic is being run in conjunction with our Southern Fried Track Event June 21-22.  We have also provided the option of participating in the lapping without doing the clinic.  There is a price break for the lapping if you are signing up for both events.

Clinic attendees will have their day divided between classroom sessions, in-car sessions with mentors (Level II), and lapping sessions.  Afterwards, you will be well versed in what we as a club and track event organization expect from our instructors.  The Level II guys and gals will either be asked to join our instructor core, or will come away with a knowledge and plan of things to work on towards that goal.

Those of you lapping only will have more track time than you can shake a stick at... keep in mind though, HPDE protocols will still be in effect.  While the passing zones will be more lenient for the advanced level of driver's in attendance, point-bys will still be required, and no passing in the the turns.

There will be an all-hands driver's meeting to go over all the on track rules before the start of the day.

The next page will detail all the requirements for attend this event

Event requirements

Special note for this event:
Due to the requirements for this event, it is being restricted to 'Approved'  Triangle Z -- Tarheel SCC MotorsportReg members only.  If you get a message stating you cannot register at this time, it probably means your MSR account has not been 'Approved'  for Triangle Z -- Tarheel SCC as of yet.  If this happens, please email us immediately so we can get you approved, or tell you what is needed so you can register for the event.  This should only happen with new MotorsportReg accounts, or if you have done less than 2 events with us.

Instructor Clinic
It is highly recommended that any advanced level driver participate in the instructor clinic.  Participation does not guarantee a spot on the instructor roster, however we probably will invite certain individuals that show exceptional skills to move on up.  Space is limited for the clinic.  TZC/THSCC will separate clinic attendees into two groups:

  • Level I - classroom only ... this will be for advanced drivers wanting a taste and a lot of info about what we are looking for in our instructors.  When you're not in class, you will be able to participate in the lapping
  • Level II - classroom and track instruction ... Level II participants will be determined based on previous instructor recommendations, TZC/THSCC observations, and any current instructor for other groups who we feel the need to assess before assigning them a student (usually an instructor with less than 2 years or less than 10 events instructing).  In addition to the classroom sessions, you will be paired up with a mentor, and you will go out on track and instruct them.  They may, or may not, throw some common on-track "situations" at you to see how well you react to and/or prevent them.
Level II attendees will be determined by TZC/THSCC staff

Instructor Refresher/Mentor

Current instructors wishing to fulfill their clinic-every-other-year requirement should sign up for the clinic as well.  All recent mini-clinic graduates should sign up for this if you have not already done the full clinic.  Classroom participation will be mandatory, some of you may be asked to be mentors to the Level II clinic attendees.

The schedule for the clinic and refresher will be emailed to you

Advanced / Intermediate / Instructor Lapping
In an effort to make this weekend a little more attractive, we will have solo lapping throughout the day.  The format will be a checker every 30 minutes, passing on the straights with a point-by.  Clinic and Refresher participants will see a reduction in on-track time due to classroom sessions (thus the discounted price).

Rules of the Road
Even though this will be more of an open-type format, the rules on the track will not change.  Lapping participants will use Red group rules: passing on any non-turn with a point (reviewed in the morning drivers meeting).  Corner workers and flagging protocol will be standard HPDE fare, two-off rule will still be in effect.

  • Previous solo HPDE experience is required as instructors will NOT be provided
  • If you have not done an event with us previously, we reserve the right to require references as to solo experience and/or put a club member with you during your first session for a check-ride
  • Intermediate level drivers MUST have previous venue experience

Pricing

  • Instructor Clinic $150
  • Instructor Refresher/Mentor $100
  • Lapping only (with Sat/Sun HPDE) $175
  • Lapping only (without Sat/Sun HPDE) $200

We do not  recommend staying at the Executive Inn in Kershaw.  **Update 6/2008... we have heard from a trustworthy source that the Executive Inn has improved, and may be under new management.  A stay there a couple months ago garnered an "it was fine" reveiew**
