Program

“I was in love with racing from the first, but I’ll admit car racing was my first love,” says Chip Hanauer. “I was caught up in the romance of it, the international stars. My greatest admiration was for a man like Jim Clark who represented a great personality contrast. Here he was a mild mannered Scottish gentleman, a farmer, yet the master of his craft in an intensely aggressive profession.”

Had Chip Hanauer grown up in Indianapolis, we know he would have been an auto racer. Had he grown up in Kentucky, he probably would have raced horses. But he grew up in Seattle in the 1950s and 1960s, when Seattle was the boat racing capital of the world and the biggest sports stars were hydroplane drivers. So Chip started racing while still in grade school.

He moved up quickly and by the time he was 22, he got his first unlimited boat drive. That was 1976 and by 1979 he had his first unlimited class win.

Chip raced for 35 years, ending up with 61 unlimited class wins, one less than his mentor, Bill Muncey. Hanauer has seven UHRA national championships to his credit and an unprecedented eleven Gold Cups; the Super Bowl of boat racing.

There was a price to pay for all those wins. Hanauer has suffered many a broken bone and has had his boat nearly kill him a number of times.

Perhaps the most interesting thing about Chip Hanauer was how unaffected he was by it all. He always made himself available to the press and the fans. He always spoke from the heart and always had the best intentions for hydroplane racing, even when that didn’t agree with the “party line” from the sanctioning body.

Chip is also not a one-dimensional person. He graduated cum laude from Washington State with a degree in Special Education. He spends much of his time helping children with behavior disorders brought on by abuse. He also speaks to business and other groups about “Lessons from a Dangerous Life.”

Dress Code
You don’t need to wear a suit and tie, so business casual is your ticket in the door. We want you to come, have fun, socialize with other members and would we’d prefer no jeans or athletic shoes. Mostly we just want everyone to be comfortable. And be there! Ladies there is nothing stopping you from dressing up, so if you have a special outfit wear it..

Calling all folks – do you have an item you’d like to donate to the auction?
If you have items you would like to donate, please contact de-Anna Martin @ deMartin@pc-resource.com or via phone at 206-274-5274.

Raffle Auction
We’ll still have the Live Auction and in response to your feedback to reduce the long check-out lines at the end of the evening. We’ve changed up the format for the items that don’t make the main stage to a raffle system. Individual items will be assigned a bucket and you’ll deposit raffle tickets for a chance to be selected. The more you deposit the greater the chances of being selected. The cost for the tickets will be $5.00 per ticket or 5 for $20. You can bring cash, charge to a credit card or pay by check.

We’ve secured a discounted rate for you. How’s a nightly rate of $109 plus $10 for overnight parking plus the applicable taxes. This rate has been secured for Friday 1/30/09 and Saturday 1/31/09. Now that’s a steal for a hotel in DT Bellevue that is just 3 years old.

To make the reservation for this discounted price: (Deadline1/7/09)
Call: 1-800-716-5874
Reference: BMW Car Club Room Block.

5 rooms have been blocked for Friday and 10 for Saturday. If the block is full the hotel has graciously agreed to extend the rate pending hotel availability. If you know you want to spend the night, please make the reservation by 1/7/09.

Other Clubs and SIG
We’re extending a special invitation to the members of the BMW Clubs in Portland, Spokane and Vancouver, B.C, as well as the Porsche club. We encourage the various Clubs and Special Interest Groups to attend. Get together a group of 10 and you will have a whole table for the evening. Please designate a person to save the table for you, as this year we’re making it first come first serve for the best seats in the house.

A Final Word
It’s no overstatement to say this will be a unique event with some “edge of your seat stories” from Chip Hanauer. You should be a part of it! Register now and set the date aside. We’re going to have a great time.

The final deadline for all registrations is receipt by January 22nd, 2009. We cannot accommodate walk-ins or registration during the last week before the event.   For questions, please contact de-Anna Martin at deMartin@pc-resource.com or (206) 274-5274.
